So I know Khmer isn't the most popular language on this forum, but I am really enjoying David Smyth's Colloquial Cambodian] and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to a good Cambodian-English/English-Cambodian dictionary? Apparently, the afforementioned author has a dictionary published by Tuttle...any thoughts/comments/suggestions?

Hi Indiritheach,

Here’s my take on Khmer dictionaries. I have Smyth’s Eng-Camb/Camb Eng Dictionary, and it’s not much larger than the glossaries in Colloquial Cambodian, so not so good for reading news articles etc, although it can help you consolidate basic vocabulary. Unfortunately, it seems that it’s not easy to get hold of a good dictionary outside of Cambodia itself.

The best large dictionary for Camb-Eng IMO is by Robert Headley, published by the Catholic Univ of America. If you were in Cambodia, you could buy this, or (since intellectual property rights are a dead letter in Cambodia) you could get other, cheaper editions with exactly the same content. Another good one for learners is Jacob’s Concise Camb-Eng Dictionary - some of it is on Google Books, so you can see what it’s like. However, like with Headley, the price on Amazon is really exorbitant and just not worth it. There is also a dictionary published by Hippocrene, but publications by them are generally pretty shoddy, so I can’t recommend it.

So I guess my advice would be to wait until you actually visit Cambodia…

Dunwoody Press has announced a Cambodian-English dictionary to be published soon; their books are usually expensive, but most of them are quite good. (I've bought quite a number of books from them over the years, but not for Cambodian.) The new dictionary is a second edition, and so is presumably an improved version of an earlier dictionary.

(See under "forthcoming publications")

Note that they also have some other materials for Cambodian as well: http://www.dunwoodypress.com/search.php?tpl=17&catid=7&searc hname=cambodian&submit.x=10&submit.y=16

If you are on a mac or have an iphone then there is a pretty good dictionary in the app store. I would use this above
a paper dictionary any day of the week. There is also one on android which I have, but I haven't had a look at yet.

The Tuttle dictionary is fantastic for when you start learning, especially because the words are also written
phonetically.

This dictionary is actually quite good too.
