Is it possible to have inline access to a dictionary which gives the meaning of a German

StarDict should work, if you find a good dictionary for it.

Isnt that just a dictionary?

If you're reading the texts online, I'm sure there are plugins, e.g. popup dictionaries. Do a search for plugins for your preferred browser.

In Stardict settings, there is an item called "Scan" (which you also need to check at the bottom left of the main window) which is basically a little pop-up that appears after you've selected some text and pressed the pre-defined key. It works well.

In Firefox I use the extensions "Fast Translate" and "Grammarly", which work well.

The wikipedia page for Stardict indicates that it may do the trick:
"While StarDict is in scan mode, results are displayed in a tooltip, allowing easy dictionary lookup. When combined with Freedict, StarDict will quickly provide rough translations of foreign language websites" Sounds promising... I forgot to mention one crucial thing: I want this for reading e-books, not just for
browsing websites. Does this mean that browser plugins are not of use?
