That's surprising because when I write I honestly have no idea if it's in any way
understandable or correct. I'm relying heavily on dictionaries. But thanks! In terms of
courses I've only used NFWE and Using French so far. I've been watching lots of TV
(mostly Friends) and trying to read native materials everyday, which has been mostly news
so far but lately I've been reading Le Petit Prince. I gave up on Anki a while ago after
I missed a week or two and the reviews became unmanageable.

Week 30: 790 minutes
Total: 18,031 minutes or 300h 31m

Maintenant, 500 heures!

Don't worry, it's sufficiently correct to be perfectly understandable :)
Despite the mistakes, I would even say that your style is rather natural and agreable to read.

@Arnaud25 Merci beaucoup! That's very encouraging to hear.

Français
Total (as of week 35): 346h 51m

Nederlands. Laat me even uitleggen.

Afrikaans

Bah, life's too short not to enjoy this wonderful language so I've decided to continue
my efforts to increase my passive skills. As Serpent says, passive activities probably
won't cause interference with my Dutch and so I feel safe to listen as much as I want.

Edit: Tidied up my French.

Grappige ontdekking inderdaad!

My favourite part of French In Action is when they make up a dialogue between a woman and
Fido the dog. I love the humour in this course and the fact that it gives me the feeling of
being in a classroom. However, the workbook is so packed full of exercises that I've started
skipping some otherwise every chaptor will take ages.

I did try the French 101 podcasts but as Jeffers said in his intro post, there is too much
chatting in English for it to feel like a useful way to spend my time.

I swear the more intensely I learn one language, the stronger my wanderlust becomes. Suddenly
I’m eyeing up Hebrew, Arabic, Turkish, Korean and Japanese. I just tell myself, “Next year,
next year you might have time for another. But not now!” I can’t help wanting to do some
preliminary research though.

Stats

Week 4: 784 minutes or 13 hours and 4 minutes
Total: 1851 minutes or 30 hours and 51 minutes

Assimil: leçon 26
French In Action: leçon 4

I know this is an old post by you, but man I feel exactly the same way you felt. I'm on chapter eleven of FIA and ever since I got past chapter 5,I feel like I could spend like 5-6 hours just to become competent in the information they're giving. I watch the video at least twice, do the pronunciation audio lessons that take like 30 minutes, the audio+ transcript shadowing lessons which can take another 10-30 minutes depending on how long you go through it. Then all the written and audio lessons in the book (usually around 30-40 lessons). All of that for ONE chapter!

I feel better knowing you were just as daunted by FIA as I am haha.

Anyways, I like your log and it's nice to see your progress! I'm going down a similar route(Assimil and FIA, mixed with native materials). You're further ahead of me though so it's nice to see what my french future may possibly look like!

Keep up the good work!

Dat zal me zeker lekker boos maken.

@ fortheo - Unfortunately I never made it through FIA. I suppose in the end I was just
too lazy to complete every lesson since the videos alone are 30 minutes. I keep
thinking that maybe I should watch the videos to help plug the holes in my vocabulary.

Nederlands

I'll do an update for French later.

Français

Total (week 41): 399 hours and 24 minutes

My French is coming along nicely. Well, at least my passive French. I think my passive
skills might be edging towards the A2/B1 border which is rather exciting.

I watch a lot of the French tv programme On n’est pas couché where they talk about
politics and culture. This is the kind of content I aspire to understand. Maybe I’m
weird but I find it fun to watch things that I can’t yet understand so it’s no problem
for me to watch a show like that on a regular basis. It’s paying off anyway because
I’m starting to understand more and more. I can certainly follow the gist which is an
improvement from just getting the odd word here and there.

I also read my first full book, Charlie et la Chocolaterie. After that I tried Harry
Potter but I seemed to be missing too many important details so I decided to read
books aimed at learners until I start to feel more confident about my reading skills.
I’ve been reading A2 and B1 level books and they are quite comfortable to read. I
don’t feel the need to pick up a dictionary unless a completely unknown word keeps
coming up over and over again.

I’ve started using Duolingo because it forces you to activate your knowledge and
that’s exactly what I need. While I was a beginner in Dutch I felt constant pressure
to work on my active skills because those are the ones I was judged on in everyday
life. With French I have a more rebellious approach. This is the first language I’m
learning purely because I want to and it acts as stress relief so if I want to be lazy
about writing and speaking, that’s fine with me. There is no French speaking father-
in-law to comment negatively on my progress and compare me to other foreigners
(hallelujah!) so it’s my French and I’ll be sucky if I want to. That being said, I
don’t want to sound like a total buffoon in French which is why I am making feeble
attempts with Duolingo.

My current daily routine involves:
- Assimil Using French
- Duolingo
- Reading
- Listening

My wanderlust symptoms are back. I’m still hoping medical science will find the cure
but they are probably too busy with Ebola at the moment. I don’t think I should start
a new language until I have done 600+ hours of French, so probably not until late
2015/early 2016.
