Bedankt Vos! Ik ben van plan om alle boeken uit Het Lied van Ijs en Vuur serie te lezen. Ik weet dat toen ik met Tadoku bezig was, ik de boeken van Adriaan van Dis heel interessant vond. Ik heb nog nooit een roman van hem gelezen (maar misschien ga ik dat dit jaar doen) maar zijn reisboeken zijn heel interessant. Hij is ook een heel interessante man omdat hij veel talen spreek. Volgens mij spreek hij naast Nederlands ook Frans, Duits, Afrikaans en Indonesisch (omdat hij in Nederlands-Indië geboren werd). Omdat ik Frans leer op dit moment wil ik dit ook graag lezen http://www.bol.com/nl/p/stadsliefde/1001004011542789/ Oh, en ik wil ook iets van Jelle Brandt Corstius lezen. Hij is een journalist die Russisch spreekt en mooie documentaires over Rusland heeft gemaakt. Slight confession that I haven't been doing quite as much French as I had hoped. Well, after I started reading Persepolis I started to prefer doing Super Challenge activities to actual study. I wish I was at the point when I could just read and read and read. But...from the writing I've done I realised that I really need to work on my knowledge of grammar. I think I need to keep a balance between real study and dipping into native materials. I'm at the level where I can use native materials but not as my sole resource. Anyway, my current "routine" is: Assimil NFWE active wave Assimil Using French Anki Reading (not everyday) RFI journal en français facile (when I remember) Although I'm not fulfilling my own expectations, any progress is good progress. I'll update my total study time later. Dutch I've been reading Het Spel der Tronen which is fantastic. My plan is to read all of the Song of Ice and Fire books so I can be the holder of spoilers and tease my boyfriend during the next season. However, I think I will get the next book as an ebook because they are huge and not conducive to cosy reading. Turkish I have to learn this language. It's true love. But French needs my full attention and the last thing I should do is jump into my first non-Indo-European language. So I've given Turkish a promise ring with the intention of learning it when my French can stand on it's own two feet. In the meantime I'll enjoy the plethora of amazing rock and alternative music in the Turkish language. I know exactly what you mean, especially as I often can't get my reading time in longish, uninterrupted chunks. - What about recording your reading by pages instead? - Even though the number of words per page may vary from book to book (depending on typefaces/ typesize, layout, etc...), I find page-count a useful enough measure; the variations from book to book seem to balance themselves out over time. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I've been doing that for the Super Challenge and yes that is a much better way of recording reading. I think it's very motivating too, especially if you're not yet able to read without a dictionary and every page is an achievement. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

A good balance is a great thing when you find it. I flicked through Benny's book recently, and he mentioned the fact that he found grammars useful once he passed the beginner stage because when he read about some verb or structure, he knew a bit about it from use, and the grammar served to help him make sense of what he was already experiencing. Currently, I'm doing nothing but using native materials (having finished Assimil NFWE in April). It's great when I hear or read a phrase and recognize it from Assimil. You know you're doing something right when the words you study from textbooks come up in your reading, and the words you learn from reading come up in your textbooks.
