+1. Sounds great! :) One of the few languages that I would say that I actually care about how "good" it sounds. Most languages sound just as good as any other to me. But Brazilian Portuguese is SWEET.

They do call it "the sweet language."

Yes, French was a Lingua Franca for the early part of the 20th century. European political gatherings were conducted in French and when Britain declared war on the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the official letter was typed in French.

Even today, French remains (in theory at least) the official language of the Olympic Games and clings on in the Eurovision Song Contest.
