Jeffers, I tried listening to it, but - I suspect b/c of my hearing impairment - couldn't make it all out. (The first section sounded to me as if they're saying the same thing over and over*, which I'm sure they're not!) Will try to find the text (I think it's somewhere upstairs, in one of my too-many bookcases), to see if helps. *Well, not literally each word, but I think you know what I mean. To me it was easily comprehensible, all the words used made clear sense to me, but I did find it difficult to
repeat some phrases without multiple attempts as the word order although grammatically correct feels unnatural (it's obviously just more formal with subject-verb order reversed). I've noticed FSI favours this word order which is either a sign of it's age or an expectation upon diplomats etc learning the language to comprehend and use the more formal variety of the language... or both. It's unlikely such word order would be used in every day 'common' situations (pls correct me if I'm wrong), but tuning one's mind/ear to it would still be useful for comprehending formal speech should it so arise. I must say I do enjoy the drills of FSI- very very useful IMO, and favouring this word order throughout is useful as most other programs/courses I've used only touch on this to a small degree. Actually, you're not far off. Only the subject pronouns and the verbs change, e.g.: Elles sont en retard; proquoi ne sont-elles pas à l'heure? Then the instructor says, "Il est en retard", and you have to supply: Il est en retard; pourquoi n'est-il pas à l'heure? 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

My fellow Deuxièmistes, as my health problems have now unfortunately taken a turn for the worse, I regret to
say that that I should bow out of the official role as team "leader". Would one of you others like to take it on? I have been admitted to hospital, and something one *does* often have a lot of in hospitals, is time. My first priorities are of course the medical ones, but - if possible - I'd very much like to continue to check in from time to time with Htlal - not as a "distraction", but simply for the pleasure and interest I get from them. (Who knows? I may even find it that I'll post that - now six-monthly - summary I've been in the middle of totting up!) But on the v. small offchance that I don't have to opportunity to do so, or to post anything else, I wanted to at least let you folks know the situation, rather than abandoning things without word or warning. I`m very sorry to hear this, songlines. I don't know the circumstances of your admission
to the hospital, but I hope nonetheless that you will have a swift recovery. As for the matter of a new team leader, I would be willing to take it up if no one else steps up. I haven't been terribly active compared to some of our other members, but if it can help keep the team running, I'm in. There's just the matter of my imminent "déménagement". I leave for Quebec the 18th and after dealing with the move and some family matters, will be on holiday in Montreal until September. After that, I will be starting my studies and looking for part time work. Consequently, I will have less time than I do now, but would still be willing to step in as the new leader if no other more qualified persons step up. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

This is not good news at all Songlines. I read it the moment you posted it and had been
wondering what's going on with your health. It's not my business and i'm not asking for you to elaborate, i'm just letting you know that I hope it's not terribly drastic and that you can make a decent recovery. I'm going to use your situation as motivation too. We often take for granted our time, I need to keep in mind that some people simply cannot devote any or much time to language learning because they are unwell or in circumstances that don't allow for such liberties. I hope Songlines your liberty returns sooner than you think. As for health, knowledge is power. I truly hope you recover fully, very soon! As for team leader I don't think that's for me, but i'm sure team 2ème can still function if we all provide input and support like a true democracy. 1 person has voted this message useful |
