Verbal language may seem fast because people also do not generally speak in complete
sentences. Do some volunteer transcriptions of radio/TV interviews, and you'll be surprised how many informal contractions there are, and phrasal discussion without a subject or a verb clause. English has many informal contractions like "gonna" or "wouldja" that are not in a dictionary. I'm sure this takes place in all languages. It can also depend on the region. Native Mandarin speakers from Taiwan tend to speak
slower than say native speakers from northern China. Mandarin speakers from Beijing generally can talk extremely fast, so fast that they may have to slow down their Mandarin for other native speakers (even those from northern China) to be understood.
