This week's report:
Team Asgard (Scandinavian TAC) DANSK: • Daily "Her og nu" course segment, to completion, so that's that course done now. • Watched two hours of "Forbrydelsen". EN subtitles, but I have no way of disengaging those. Understanding much more now, in any case. Danish no longer sounds only like a drunken slurring mess to me. Finally, at episode ten, or wherever I'm up to. • Up to unit 6 of 18, of my TY Danish. Will be doing at least a unit a day now, by quasi-necessity as I must then return it to the library. It's the old TY course, not the new format, but the old ones are somewhat more comprehensive actually, so should take me to something vaguely resembling B2 level. • Daily Anki cards, populated from the above two courses, as far as I can tell so far. • Much singing along to "I Danmark er jet født" (of Natasja, not the traditional song of the same name) - the lyrics in Danish are online, which helps me to sing along (yes never mind the irony of my not being Danish, Sudanese, or female). NORSK: • Daily Anki cards with audio. • Daily "På vie" course segment. Have now "Tested out" with the final (17th) lesson. All seems pretty basic now. • Much text chat with Norwegian friend who kindly offers many corrections. To be honest, this has been my most useful study and is a reason that my Norwegian is fast becoming my strongest Scandinavian language (not that this says much so far). SVENSKA: • Daily Anki cards with audio • Finally picked a Swedish song for March's TAC challenge (yes, a little late in the month, but hey, I'll nail it before the deadline) - I opted to go with the "geek chic" option of Boten Anna - Yes, it's a really simple song, but hey, it's great, and I am doing three songs (one for each Scandinavian language I'm studying) instead of the mere one required for the TAC, so I feel no shame :) Team 鹊 (Chinese TAC) • Daily Anki cards with sound. I'm happy to report that a casual investigation of reading suggests my reading ability has greatly improved even just so far. By the end of the month my reading ability should be almost something like usable :p • Reviewed Michel Thomas Method's "Advanced Mandarin" course, CDs 3 and 4 (of 4). I skipped reviewing CDs 1 and 2 as they went far too slowly for my sanity. CDs 3 and 4 at least have some more rapidly spoken parts (each sentence constructed gets spoken by the native speaker once slowly with strongly emphasised tones, and then once at normal speed with normal levels of intonation) Team Я, я и только я (Russian TAC) • Daily Anki cards with audio • Textbook study, pushing onwards through my rather weighty textbook • Reviewed final CD of Michel Thomas Method's "Advanced Russian" - always good to brush up basic grammar once in a while. • Reading of Правда and watching videos there (with the RU subtitles switched on). I certainly couldn't follow Russian at this pace without the subtitles. Even the subtitles go a little quickly for me, but I get most of them. I find the news harder to follow than my Russian dub of the final Harry Potter movie (the only movie I have that has Russian available on the DVD, so it's had a few views lately). • Finally found a Russian song that I like, and will use for Team Катюша's February challenge (you may remember I'm not a member as they closed their doors to latecomers, but I'm catching up with them at my own pace). I'll be learning Город (Танцы Минус). I think next week I'll write this report in the respective languages, but it's late and I want to study Arabic before I go to bed an hour and a half ago, so I'm not translating these now that I've done them in English :p I write these reports as I go along during the week, so this means more active use of these languages from tomorrow, for me, to write the reports in the respective languages. Team Asgard (Scandinavian TAC) DANSK: • Anki hver dag • Jeg så Forbrydelsen (Ja, jeg ved, jeg ser det hver uge) • Jeg afsluttet danskkurset min. Endnu har jeg ikke været meget flittig med hensyn til grammatik, at foretrække hastighed i stedet for præcision - da jeg holder det for at være mere vigtigt for mig (jeg holder det som vigtigere for mig). Mit rationale er enkel, men fornuftig, jeg synes: Hvis jeg kan få et hurtigt overblik over sproget, da kan jeg læse mere og lytte mere, dermed i god tid skal fejl falde væk. Selvfølgelig kan jeg også revidere grammatik, på en senere dato. Indtil for nylig, hvor det handlede om dansk, kunne jeg bare læse. Jeg kunne ikke skrive det så godt, og talte dansk var en beruset mysterium. Men, på grund af at have studeret lidt, min forståelse af dansk begynder at forbedre - lidt efter lidt. • Jeg sang for meget på dansk. For det meste Natasjas "I Danmark er jeg født" af hvilke jeg gjorde en oversættelse. NORSK: • Anki (med lyder) hver dag • Mye samtale med en norsk venn som gir mange korreksjoner (hittil har jeg ikke formelt studert norsk, men har uformelt lært nok til å chatte hvis har jeg tilgang til en ordbok kanskje en gang per setning og frihet til å feile grammatisk. Fordi jeg bruker det på en mer aktiv måte, snart vil norsk sannsynligvis bli min sterkeste skandinavisk språk). • Jeg sang for mye på norsk. For det meste, "Hun er forelska i lær'n" av hvilke jeg gjorde en oversettelse. SVENSKA: • Anki (med ljud) varje dag • Jag sjöng för mycket på svenska. För det mesta "Boten Anna" för vilket jag gjorde en översättning. Jeg tror, at sange er meget nyttige for både at lytte og tale, da de tvinger både langsom og hurtig hastighed. • Jeg har læst nogle artikler på Wikipedia NORSK: • Anki (med lyder) hver dag • Mye samtale med en norsk venn som gir mange korreksjoner. • Jeg har lest noen artikler på Wikipedia • Jeg så på "Fritt Vilt". Det var så dårlig :p Men, det var på norsk og noen skuespillere var attraktive. Visst, alt var supersupercliché. Aldri har jeg sett en film mer perfekt cliché. SVENSKA: • Anki (med ljud) varje dag • Jag har läst några artiklar på Wikipedia • Jag har tagit ur biblioteket boken "Teach Yourself Complete Swedish", för vilken har jag köpt CDn. Nu skal jag studera med dem. Наконец, я могу теперь петь по памяти. • Смотрел фильм "Гарри Поттер и Дары Смерти", который является единственным фильмом, который у меня есть по-русски. Существовал также субтитры на русском языке. I see your log and was contemplating studying Swedish and Danish concurrently (although I
have already spent 6 months on Swedish insofar). Do you use Assimil Le Danois, Le Suédois, and Le Norvégien altogether? Buying all three with audio would be 3(€65,90), but that is another matter. I study Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Italian, i.e. four related (Romance) languages, do you find Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian simultaneously to be slightly challenging with regards to their high amount of similarity, even seems even more than the major Romance languages? 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Hi :) I haven't used Assimil at all, so I cannot comment on that.
As for DA/NO/SV and overlap, though, I've not found it to be much of a problem. If anything, the huge overlap between especially DA and NO (when written, at least) has been a great benefit in accelerating learning, and SV to a lesser degree due to being a touch more removed. The main place it causes any conflict is in in small things; spelling differences and some phonetic changes. On the bright side, Swedish seems to be the most complex in these regards, so after Swedish you should find Danish and Norwegian fairly straightforward - imagine for example (if it was not so) that you started learning French first, then took up ES/IT/PT. Because I have watched all of one movie in Norwegian, whereas I've watched quite a bit of Swedish and Danish TV, I find that when I speak Norwegian aloud (which isn't much, due to dearth of Norwegians here and my tendency to text chat with my Norwegian friend), I have to pay attention to ensure I don't use Danish phonetic rules (Norwegian: pronounce almost everything; Danish: consonants? what consonants? We'll call them "soft consonants" and pretend it's something more than a glo'l sto'). Contrary to when I started, I've grown to love the sound of Danish, so all's good. Grammar is, so far as I've found it, almost identical for the three languages, so there's very little over which to trip in terms of code-switching. While there are many fascinating nuances over which to trip in general (see my above writing which probably has errors), if you know a piece of grammar in one language, it's usually the same idea in the others. I guess it'll come down to how perfectionistic you are. For me, while I do pursue very high standards, on my way there I'm content to "fail fast and fail often", as the saying goes, in the pursuit of that improvement. I simply try to not fail the same way twice ;) For others, they'd want to hone their skills in one before taking on the next when they can already out-smoothtalk native politicians on their home turf with textbook-perfect grammar and vocab usage When I'm speaking Spanish, I still sometimes use an Italian word or construction every once in a while if I'm not paying attention. But you know what? All this means is that the Spaniard is interested to learn I also speak Italian. It doesn't cause any issue and can be glossed over smoothly enough. Hell, when I'm speaking Italian, I've been known to use a Latin word or construction on occasion. Italians think it's quaint if I do. No big deal - to me. Your opinions may vary. Short version: Based on my experience such as it is, I wholeheartedly endorse leaping into studying all three at once, and have broadly found it to yield far more benefits than problems. 3 persons have voted this message useful | |

Catch-up general report, as I've not weighed in here for a few weeks, since I got out of the habit when HTLAL was down at the weekend when I normally update.
Team Asgard (Scandinavian TAC) DANSK: For nylig studerede jeg dansk ikke meget. Jeg er færdig med den første serie af Forbrydelsen og jeg er endnu ikke begyndt den anden serie. Ærlig talt har jeg været doven med dansk, fordi jeg praktiserer så meget norsk. Det føles som jeg bør være i stand til at genoptage dansk på ethvert givet tidspunkt. NORSK: Norsk nå er ganske behagelig for meg siden jeg bruker det hver dag. Jeg gjør fortsatt mange feil, men jeg bryr meg ikke for mye om det. Klart vil jeg forbedre min norsk, og klart vil jeg eliminere feil, men for øyeblikket er jeg ganske glad om at jeg kan kommunisere - mesteparten av tiden - med en grunnleggende taleferdighet. Jeg tok boken "Teach Yourself Complete Norwegian" fra biblioteket, og jeg fant at det var nesten ingenting deri som var vanskelig for meg. Denne boken er regnet for å være materiale opptil B2. Derfor kan jeg nå si med rette, tror jeg, at "jeg snakker norsk" selv om jeg har rikelige feil og mange vokabularhull. Jeg kan snakke og bli forstått; jeg kan bruke bare ord som jeg kjenner og forsatt kan jeg snakke om uansett tema. Nå må jeg bare forbedre det! SVENSKA: Tiden kommer, tiden går, som säger låten. En gång i tiden var svenska kanske min starkaste skandinaviska språk. Nu kan jag ju förstå det ganska väl men skrivandet mitt är ju skrämmande, og uttalet mitt är... speciell. På den ljusa sidan, jeg såg (på?) några episoder av "Solsidan" utan undertexter och jag förstod den merparten därav. Just a note to mention that I'm alive and all that ;)
Been a little busy with work. Exam season = everyone thinks a tutor is their best friend. These past weeks I've been functioning almost exclusively in EN/FR/ES/IT professionally and socially, and additionally NO/SV/SR purely socially (I found a Serb, a Swede, and a Swedish-speaking Finn, and have been chatting with them accordingly - Norwegian, as discussed, is an ever-present for me these days). (AR/DA/RU/ZH have barely featured these past weeks, for shame, with the exception of singing along to some songs) Back to "business as usual" the end of this week, I expect, so expect more regular log entries and TAC participation to recommence. 1 person has voted this message useful |
