FSI Modern Written Arabic Book 1
I finished lesson 3. My reading comprehension is fine. It is just that when I listen to the tapes, I can understand the individual words. But I fail to grasp what the words mean when they are put together. Madinah Book 1 I finished the exercises for lesson 4A and started lesson 5. I read the Key first, which is like a study guide for self-learners. Then, I watched the corresponding video from lqtoronto.com. Finally, I read the textbook and did the exercises. The exercises take time. Time spent there is worth the effort, though. I cannot believe how fast I can write Arabic now. The instructor (DVD), Mr. Meherali, does not confine himself to the textbook. He is teaching concepts I could only find in the later books (Books 2 & 3). I have watched the first 2 DVDs (out of 9) and he has already taught the 14 pronouns using a song. He has also started verbs although Book 1 does not explain verbs at all. He sings. He even tells jokes. What more could I want in a teacher? When I first started learning Arabic about 3 years ago, I found an excellent verb conjugation table online (they use the same chart at DLI). Unfortunately, I did not know enough Arabic to be able to use it then.
Now that I am studying verbs, I thought it might be useful to have. I scoured the internet but failed to find a decent copy. Fortunately, I found the old DVD where I had saved it. I wrote in Arabic for the first time on lang8 and it got corrected within 3 minutes.

I am posting a page from my diary to show what my handwriting looks like. Eventually, I want to write in the elegant ruq3ah script. English Translation: This is Napoleon's handwriting. Is this ruq3ah? No, this is Napoleon's handwriting. Who wrote it? Napoleon wrote it. And where did you write? I wrote in the notebook. Is Napoleon's handwriting beautiful? No, it is ugly. Hello! I just came upon this thread, and it's what I have been looking for! I feel
like you all are way ahead of me, so I am not sure if you will want me to join. :-) Also, I am using different sources. I started by watching Maha's videos on YouTube and recently ordered "Mastering Arabic" by Wightwick and Gaafar. I have looked at the FSI MWA course, and I would like to start that. I am like a kindergartner right now because I know the letters, but I can't read words, I can only read one letter at a time, so I am incredibly slow! I am hoping that with practice this script will get into my brain more so that I will start being able to read words, not a letter at a time. I am learning MSA, but my main interest for colloquial will eventually be Eastern. However, for now, I am just wanting to focus on MSA. Nancy Edited to add: Just as a side note, I am not learning Arabic for religious reasons, so I am interested in MSA rather than classical. If I can fit into your log group, I would be very glad to be included, but I understand if you'd like to limit it to people who are studying similar materials for similar reasons. Thanks! On the contrary, it would be a pleasure to have you join our group. We are all beginners. I am what you'd call a false beginner, but a beginner none the less. :-)
Have you tried the 'Mastering Arabic Script' book by Wightwick and Gafaar? It really helped me when I was learning the script.
Both Dina and I are learning MSA, while David is studying Egyptian Arabic. My own interests are not religious at all. All I want is to be able to understand the Arabic news on TV. :-) The only reason I chose the Madinah book is because the lqtoronto lectures use this book. Thank you very much Napoleon! I did learn the script using Maha's videos, so I recognize
all of the letters and can come up with them on my own, my problem as of right now is reading. I read somewhere that you should try to memorize words like a picture so that whenever you see that word, you'll know what it means without having to go letter by letter through the word. Is that what you do? I know I need patience because I am just beginning! But when I look at a page full of Arabic script, I feel tired! :-) So I did look at the Madinah book, and I got scared! Ha! But maybe I can pick up on it after a few more lessons of Mastering Arabic. 2 persons have voted this message useful |
