I found a more in-depth explanation of instrumental predicates in this impressive video. At 12:15 there is an example showing становиться being used as a "verb synonymous with быть", making it strongly favour an instrumental predicate especially with nouns of status, profession, or function.
I think my curiosity is satisfied for tonight.
