Hi,

Maybe you'll find the information you want if you read a couple of language logs.
Most people describe why they want to learn a language in the very first entry of their logs. The rest of the log is an account (usually very detailed) of how the language was learned. They also name the books they studied. The methods they used. What worked and what didn't. We have so many logs. I think you'll find what you want there. Some people like to learn new things, simple like that. Also when you learn a new
language you don't learn just words, you learn a lot of the culture and expand your mind. There is a proverb that says: "Learn a new language and get a new soul". The last and least favourable reason is if you live in a country where 2 or more languages are official,
you are required to take the other official language(s) in school. This is the case in Canada where we have English & French as official languages. In Hong Kong Cantonese is the first language but students in school are required to learn English and Mandarin. Another place Singapore Chinese is the majority with Malaysians, Indians and other groups as minority. Most people learn English & Mandarin in school. In my part of the world everybody would communicate in English except for a few first-generation immigrants who have not yet mastered the language. Some second-generation people pick up their mother-tongue other than English at home. Another reason is of course relocation. The first and most important is out of personal interest. You can have interest learning your mother- tongue or a new language in a classroom setting. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I love challenges. I love to understand how things work. If you know more languages you have the possibility to
access lot more resources. If you know how to speak foreign languages and you're able to address people with their native language they will open to you more naturally. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I think the answers are already covered in the whole forum and I'd recommend reading through some logs and trying the g-search function of the forum. Those two questions are the matter of 95% of the forums so it can't be expected of majority of the forum members to repeat everything of value in a shorter form here.
