Hello all, Have any of you used the Linguaphone Modern Hebrew course? In general I like Linguaphone offerings, but I'm puzzled by the fact that the Linguaphone Hebrew course does not include a translation/transliteration book such as is found in the Linguapone Arabic course. Of course, such a book is not necessary. There are other courses with non-Roman scripts/alphabets that don't have translation/transliterations.
In any case, I'd like to hear about any experiences with this course, even secondhand experiences...I hope the fact that the course is no longer offered isn't because it wasn't satisfactory.
Thanks,
John

You don't have a translation or transliteration?
This course is pretty hard to come by. How many books did you receive?

There is a Handbook (Explanatory Notes / Vocabularies) with translations of the lessons but I have seen no transliteration.

Hello, Thanks for taking the time to respond to my rather vague query. I've since looked more carefully at the course and concluded that it's really quite good. I believe that one of the things that puzzled me is that both the Linguaphone Hebrew and Arabic courses were written by the same man, Menahem Mansoor (one of the grand old men of America Semitic scholarship). There is a separate Translation/Transliteration book with the Arabic course (in addition, of course, to the Handbook), but not with the Hebrew. As an elderly academic who in his time wrote some texts, I know that publishers often make decisions that astound authors, and it may be that that's the case here. But it may also be that Mansoor didn't think that Hebrew needed a Translation/Transliteration book, while Arabic did.
And I'm also curious about why Linguaphone discontinued Hebrew. Given what one finds on Amazon, it appears as if Hebrew is quite a popular language among a wide variety of people. "It is a puzzlement!"

It seems that Linguaphone is a much reduced company that has gone through many buy-outs
and restructures since its publishing heyday - and its main business is in language
schools. Consequently, it has rolled back much of its publishing activities.

A shame since Hebrew could do with a good
textbook.

I wrote Linguaphone about 3 months ago asking if they were going to produce a Beginners to Advanced series for Modern Hebrew, but they said they wasn’t. I then asked about the old version and whether they could find or sell me one from their old stock, but that also wasn’t an option.
Jpazzz: I sent you a PM in regards to Linguaphones old course material. As Cabaire said, there is no transliteration, but there is a translation. Is the course you have the 30 lessoned course? Also if you can't read Hebrew I know of an awesome book that can teach you in no time and costs very little.
