An interesting programme in the BBC Radio 4 Series "Word of Mouth" about "Social
Register"

Social Register

With Michael Rosen.

Usually iPlayer programmes are limited to 7 days, but I'm not seeing a limit on this
one. It also might be downloadable as a podcast.

The programme is about whether we adapt the choice of language we use according to the
person we are talking to, and if so, are we doing this consciously or not.

This is in the context of people speaking English with each other, and whether they
adapt their register (e.g. a regional accent speaker sounding more RP or vice-versa),
but it could equally apply to other languages and perhaps even across languages.
