FILMS
1. Robin Hood (Disney)

I figured it would be better to start with something easy, and this little jewel that I have known forever seemed
like a good bet. I watched it last night, after midnight, and I am happy that although I cannot follow all the
dialogue, I can still recognise a lot more words and sentences, than last year.

I think I will start out with my Disney movies, progress to Twilight and American comedies in translation, then
more serious American movies, and then at the end, actual Russian movies.

I am so happy to have started!

BOOKS

1. Agatha Christie: Appointment with death - first 50 pages

In a moment of hubris, I thought: "Hey, if I can do 50 pages a day, I can sweep through Russian literature in
no time". Delusional. Totally delusional. The only reason why I could do 50 pages today was because I have
just been reading part of the book in April, and have looked up some of the words, because this is a holiday
and because I got up at 5 to start reading and have spent all day on it. Not something I can reproduce on a
daily basis.

But I am still euphoric. When I read a Russian book last year, I understood perhaps 5-10%, and now I am up
to 40%. Compared to those who only have to look up 5-10 words a page, that may seem ridiculous, but for
me that is a huge step. I read a lot out loud in order to figure out the unknown words, and it actually helps a
lot.

Watched two films in French: Game of Death & Avengers, listened to 1 hour podcast in French.

But I've only read 2 pages in French! and nothing in Italian (Although I had an hour language exchange in Italian, so bit of a time sink)

As I suspected reading is going to be a problem for me. I'm thinking about abandoning the book I started on for a simple reader to get more pages. sigh.... I'll stick with the plan for 7 days at least before doing readjustments to the plan. I'm sure I can knock out the 2 films in Italian and hope to make up on the reading.

I can barely drag my butt out of bed for 6:30 to go to work, so getting up early is a non starter! I admire your fortitude Serpent!

DOOH! Sorry Solfrid, it is actually YOU that I admire. :))

*scratching head* - I'm sure I dictated that to my secretary correctly.

If you were to mistake me for anyone, I am flattered that it was Serpent, and if you disregard the fact that she
is a young, slender black haired Russian, and I am a middle aged, plump, blond Norwegian we are practically
identical twins :-)

I started out with my own version of easy.
I've been reading and listening to a Spanish translation of James Oliver Curwood's _Kazan_. I plan to listen to a half hour of the audiobook and read aloud a half hour daily during my regular language study time. The audiobook is read faster than I can read aloud, so I'm reading things that I recently listened to. I've got fifteen books ready to got this way if I still want to do it after the first one. I've been sort of shocked how well I am doing understanding the audiobook.

I also put a bunch of the book into anki. I've been working on getting to 10000 sentences, and so I'm getting the translator's idiolect in my daily anki dose also. Of course I'm not counting anki as a part of this challenge, but it looks to me like it may make a nice adjunct, as long as I can get through my anki without taking too much time away from extensive listening and reading. I've reduced my new card count down to 20 a day for now.

I've the Spanish versions of several of the first books I read when I was learning to read English. It's a trip down memory lane. I'll move into native, untranslated material eventually...
