Since you mentioned Assimil, I would like to get your attention to Linguaphone, which
some members recommended in this thread:

Linguaphone
Chinese


Given you like the Assimil approach, you may want to try Linguaphone, which is similar.
In general, I prefer the latter over the former for exotic languages since it is more
systematic and has more explicit grammar instruction.
