After a lot of excellent advice and a reminder that 8 is a lucky number in China, I've decided to learn Mandarin in 2 days, 2 weeks, 2 months and 2 years before my birthday. 2+2+2+2=8
I got a lot of great advice in this thread: Realistic Plan for Learning Mandarin My plan is to start with this: 1) Listen to Pimsleur level I, II, III 2) Learn all the Hanzi used in the Pimsleur course (I found a transcript) 3) Create ANKI flashcards with Hanzi, Pinyin, English & Audio of the Pimsleur course. (I've done lessons 1-4 already. 4) Spend 1/2 per day listening and repeating pronunciation from Pinyin Table until I've done at least 25 hours. 5) Learn stroke order and write all the Hanzi in the Pimsleur course using Stroke Order Tool write out 5 per day. I'm depending heavily on LeoSmith's plan for Mandarin here I've decided not to plan any further than this, although I do have a significant amount of resources, books, tapes, etc. All advice gratefully received, as well as links, hints, tips, tricks, software! It is interesting you say that. I gave serious thought to Japanese but somehow feel that I squandered my chance when I lived in Okinawa for 18 months and only ever spoke English. But I'm collecting material... it is on the list! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Mandarin Update.
I've been at this for about a week now, and I'm quite excited to be doing a new language. I suspect this will wear off when the going gets hard. But; "When the going gets tough, the tough go fishing." I've only managed an hour of listening and repeating pronunciation from Pinyin Table, it is difficult for me to find time alone with a computer to do this. More successful with the ANKI deck. I've transcribed all of Pimsleur lessons 1-7 into the ANKI deck with Pinyin, Characters, and audio from the CD's. I've been doing this each day. Writing characters for the purpose of memorisation is sort of going well. I've managed to learn all the characters from 1-10 and the first 5-10 characters in the Pimsleur dialogues. I even managed to recognise 2 of 4 characters on the side of a "China Shipping" lorry (truck) yesterday and guessed the other two. The transcript which I found for the Pimsleur lessons is simplified rather than traditional, so looks like I'll be learning those first. I've been watching the odd bit of YangYang Cheng on YouTube and I got some childrens stories with sub-titles in Characters. My main focus at the moment is listening to the Pimsleur lessons. I spend ~1.5 hours per day doing this. I listen to 3 lessons per day, overlapping. So this is the schedule for yesterday, today and tomorrow. 4 5 6 ---5 6 7 ------6 7 8 (no amount of editing will let me line up the three rows!) So from this you can see I'm listening to each lesson 3 times (minimum) so that I listen to it once "in advance", "when scheduled", "review". This works well in combination with the ANKI deck which is popping random bits of lessons back at me. I've decided to keep editing the initial post and update it with resources I find or use so that others have a list of them. I noticed yesterday through sheer and utter coincidence, I started my log on the 8th day of the 8th month! How can I lose!
