Accents are really interesting and they're lovely. But they can also make you
embarrassed.. I'm from Quebec and I moved to a mostly English-speaking province/city.
And people around me would laugh at my accent when I spoke English, and my English
wasn't that great at the time either.. So I was embarrassed about it. In two years,
my English improved so much! I talked English every day even though I go to a French
school. But after a year, my accent was still there and strong. So I used to sit and
listen to others and copy the way they talked. I'd repeat the same word over and over
again. And now, people are surprised when I tell them that English is not my native
language. I think accents take time, but if you practice them everyday, try to copy
others, etc., it'll work out.
I think that an accent isn't just the pronunciation. How fast you speak or the tone
in your voice can make you sound more like a native too. I realized that I had to
speak higher and slower in English, and that helped a lot too.
