I took some Japanese lessons while in uni, but stopped to study the language. A few months ago I decided to re-
start my studies seriously and get to the point where I'll have some basic fluency.

What I'm doing:

- Studying JALUP's Anki decks (1000 sentences Jap-Eng + 1000 Sentences Jap-Jap). I've finished the first 1000
cards batch, I'm struggling with the Japanese-only cards but I hope to get used to them.
- Read Yotsuba&! (comic)
- Watch some tv-series that I've already seen with subtitles, this time with no subtitles. I'm not understanding
everything, of course, but I manage to remember enough from previous viewings to be able to follow along and
still have fun.
- Studying kanji on WaniKani. So far I'm struggling to do my reviews both in Anki and WaniKani. The moment I
focus on one, I lose traction on the other… Wish there would be a way to manage this.

I've also signed up for the 6 Week challenge.

See you along the way :)

As a Japanese learner, I look forward to following your progress!

I'm a big fan of Yotsuba&! and think it should be essential reading for all Japanese students.

I'd be interested to know more about WaniKani, although I think maybe I'm too deep into the intermediate zone for it to be much use to me.

There's a WaniKani review at JALUP (can't post a link because I'm a new member, but if you google "wanikani
review jalup" you will find it). If
you're at a intermediate level and keep a good pace of kanji learning, I don't think it's worth it.

In WaniKani you learn kanji meanings and at least a reading for each one of them. And on top of that, you learn
vocabulary (my current stats for about 5 months are ~475 kanji and ~1200 words learnt). There are many
vocabulary words, and since I'm a beginner I'm learning quite a lot, but if you already know most of them... then
you would be wasting time because there is no way to skip those kanji or vocabulary words that you know
already.

That's why I think WaniKani is good for beginners, but possibly not a good choice for intermediate learners, or
those that want to learn kanji ASAP. Completing WaniKani takes about 2 years.

I hope it helped :)

Weekly update:

  • I'm level 15 on WaniKani, with 486 kanji learnt.

  • Managed to go down from ~600 reviews due in Anki to 330. I'll try to get to 0 in the
    next two weeks.

  • Read 6 (out of 9) chapters of Dragon Ball SD #1 (tankobon)

  • Started November 6 Weeks challenge! :D

I was a bit worried with my move to Barcelona, because I these weeks I couldn't find
any original Japanese material (comics, magazines, etc.), while this was something
"normal" I could get in London. However, I've tried buying something on Amazon
Japan, which has a global shipping option that pre-pays the customs, so you don't
have to pay extra handling fees (only custom taxes). I'm very happy! :) I knew in
advance how much I had to pay, Correos didn't charge me any extra (they usually take
14€) for clearing customs, and the comics arrived within a week.

I bought the first two volumes of Dragon Ball SD, which is a summary of Dragon Ball,
in SD style and with a language aimed to younger children (or in my case, beginner
students). I find Yotsuba&! easier to understand, but I can still more or less follow
what's going on. My guess is that this could be a good feed for Anki...

Weekly update:

- WaniKani stats: level 16, with 516 kanji learnt (+30 from last week).
- I couldn't manage to do much Anki studying... Went down from 330 pending reviews
from last week to 221.
- Watched 3 episodes of anime with no subtitles
- Finished Dragon Ball SD #1 and started volume #2 (6 chapters in total)
- So far, I've put more than 10 hours of study in the 6 weeks challenge!

The 6 weeks challenge is being fun. Besides, having stats about how / what I study is
nice. I'll wait until the end of the challenge to analyse my stats, but so far I'm seeing
that most of my study time comes from sessions shorter than half an hour. And that
I'm spending about half of my time reading manga.

The Dragon Ball SD manga is awesome, but it's a pity they haven't released more
volumes yet :( I still don't know which manga I'll get next. I'll either re-read some
Yotsuba, or maybe start with Sukitte ii na yo, which I don't know if I'll be able to
understand it.

My current goal for the November challenge is to put 60 hours into it. Although I'd be
happy with 40-50 too!

Another weekly update!

- WaniKani stats: level 16, with 529 kanji learnt (+13 from last week)
- Watched 1 episode of anime with no subtitles
- Read a 15-pages one-shot manga
- Had a 30 mins conversation on italki
- Put ~4 hours of study time in the 6 weeks challenge

Now that I have a decent internet connection, I started to look for italki teachers to
practise speaking. So far I only took one 30-minutes lesson, but I think i'll try to take
two 30-minutes lessons per week.

I had some friends visiting from abroad at the end of the week and that took a dent on
my study time… However I had a really nice time. Will have to catch up next week.

Hi again, another update :)

- WaniKani stats: level 17, with 555 kanji learnt (+26 from last week)
- Watched 2 episodes of anime with no subtitles
- Had a 30 minutes conversation on italki
- Put ~4.5h of study time in the 6 weeks challenge

I tried a new italki teacher this week and I didn't like it. Next Wednesday I'll have a 30-
minutes session with last week's teacher, and I'll keep looking – I'd like to have at least
two different tutors/teachers on italki.

Next week I'll have to watch 7 episodes of anime if I want to reach my November
goals… 大変ですね
