Are there any good, recent Dutch films or TV series available on DVD?

Do native Dutch materials ever have Dutch subs (e.g. for hard of hearing)?

Are non-English foreign films dubbed or subbed?

Are there any good local shops to buy cheap DVDs (e.g. maybe Supermarkets) ?

Thanks. I must try and visit soon and grab a few things.

Good Flemish series: "Het eiland," "Van vlees en bloed," "Quiz me quick" (3 comedy shows). If you get the DVD version, there should be Dutch subtitles on there. "Flikken Maastricht" (a crime show) is a good one for Dutch as it is spoken in the Netherlands.

"The Broken Circle Breakdown" is the best Flemish film in recent years.

I like "Flikken Maastricht" because it is quite dramatic and the subtitles are very
accurate. However, there is a lot of background "spannende" music to enhance the action and
suspense which I find to be an annoyance.

I watch the streaming version on line and I have not been able to find a way to download
the subtitles to a text file apart from OCR using Subrip which is a very slow and
frustrating process. Has anyone bought the DVDs and tried to get a text version of the
subtitles? The DVDs are reasonably inexpensive:

EDIT: I see that they have Region 2 protection which makes no sense at all, and a big pain.

Question: Can anyone confirm that there are Dutch subtitles on the DVDs? Other languages?

DVD Decrypter download. I can't promise it
is virus free, any more. It always was in the past, but you may wish to scan it before
installing.

I have found a dozen or so movies in the library. A couple seem to have subtitles. I
shall report back in due course.

off topic, I was mildly amused by some comments over on imdb

"I was the one saying I'm from the south and often didn't like Dutch films. That is
because I find the (Amsterdam) accent very irritating, maybe it's personal, I don't
know. But now a friend made me watch Simon and I must admit, I loved it. "

"Thanks for sharing your taste in accents but what has a Amsterdam accent has to do
with this movie? Simon speaks "brabants",like all proper hasj dealers xD"

[edit] It seems the only one I've got with dutch subtitles (voor doven en
slechthorenden) is "De Gelukkige Huisvrouw". They seem to follow the spoken dialogue
pretty closely, although abridged. Unfortunately most of the films, including this one,
aren't the sort I'd normally choose to watch for pleasure. "Simon" does seem like fun
though.

I just stumbled on this, but I've no idea if it's any better than any alternatives. Just
click on the "CC" to get subs in the vid. There seems to be an option to register, but no
idea what the advantage is.
