So I've been interested in Phags Pa for some time now, just for fun really, and I wanted to write Sanskrit and Japanese with it, however I could not figure out how to write long vowels, because the information on the internet is very skim. I figured out how to write the long /a/ because there is a mention of it, but other letters, long /i/, /u/, /e/, /o/, I could not find for the death of me.
Then I dabbled a bit with Tibetan, and I saw that to make a vowel long a small /a/ looking letter was added below the consonant or the standalone vowel form. Seeing as there is a small /a/ in Phags Pa as well I thought it might have worked in the same manner. But I don't know in what order to write it. Do I write the consonant, then the small /a/ and then the joining vowel, or vowel and then small /a/ like in Tibetan. For both Tibetan and 'Phags-pa, the lengthener -a comes before the vowel diacritic.
However, in Tibetan, it follows subfixed -r, whereas in 'Phags-pa the -a precedes - r. See http://www.babelstone.co.uk/Phags-pa/Description.html. 2 persons have voted this message useful |
