Or we can rephrase it as "some people absolutely need a teacher to learn some languages at some level for some purposes". As you said, many would learn well without a teacher if they knew it's possible.

Highly motivated autodidacts can learn a language, or indeed I think almost anything,
without a teacher. It is a matter of patience and willpower. People who are not highly
motivated autodidacts will not manage, and that might well be the great majority of
learners.
