Hello. I own a copy of Perfectionnement Italian from Assimil 1987 by F. Benedetti (hardcover edition) it has 94 lessons and 496 pages.
The other day I felt like doing more to keep my Italian sharp and found a book on the site that looks like a new edition but I'm not really sure: Perfectionnement Italian Federico Benedetti (Un volume de 70 leçons en 708 pages) Link it should be the same book, right? can anyone confirm that? 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I haven't directly compared the two Italian courses, but from what information I've come across, I believe they are completely different. The same way there are two courses called Perfectionnement Allemand with different number of lessons and completely different contents. The new Perfectionnement courses are all standardized at 70 lessons, the same way the basic courses are all standardized at 100 lessons, whereas in previous generations courses the number of lessons varied between languages.

I have both editions of Assimil Perfectionnement Italien by F. Benedetti. They are different, but only superficially so.
In the 1987 edition, the 7th, 14th, 21st, etcetera "Revisione e Note" do not contain dialogues or sound tracks. In the 2012 edition, the the 7th, 14th, 21st, etcetera "Revisione" do contain dialogues and sound tracks. These constitute the major differences. While some of the dialogues in the 1987 edition have been withdrawn and replaced by others in the 2014, they represent only a very small percentage of the total dialogues. Several of the dialogues in the 1987 have been merely reshuffled in the 2014 edition. To my mind, the differences do not justify purchasing the 2014 edition and, to be quite frank, I feel a little cheated by Assimil, a company which I hold in high regard. I confirm what has written Speakeasy, it's a revamped version.
There are new texts about Internet, communication and other stuff like that, but all the rest about culture/litterature/art/at the doctor/etc/ is the same: the texts are identical, slightly or partly rewritten. It's not a new version, it's not an identical version, it's something in-between. The voices on the mp3 of the new edition are less agreable to listen to than on the old edition (it's subjective, of course). 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I have the 87 edition (I think; I'll check when I get home) and I think it's a great course, especially the first half which has a lot of useful vocabulary and expressions. The second half is a bit too advanced, with a lot of specialised vocabulary about arts/culture/politics that isn't too useful unless you're particularly interested in these things, and then some extracts from literature. I'd have preferred more focus on everyday language, but it's still nice to get exposure to these topics. Overall I'd recommend it, especially if you already have a copy. However I've not seen the newer edition so I don't know how it compares.
