Creative Ways to Use FSI? | ||

Howdy,
I'm currently learning Spanish using the latest Assimil course and I'm pretty much an Assimil-style learner. That said, I've been thinking about incorporating some FSI into my studies; however, I don't want to spend a year doing the entire course. I've been thinking about using Audacity to make a dialog only MP3 for each unit as well as, say, a MP3 of just the substitution drills or another set of drills. Would this be useful? And if I decide to do only one or two sets of drills per each unit, which drills would you recommend I choose? Also, do you all have any other creative ways to use FSI? I thought I was an "Assimil-style" learner... until I did FSI Spanish! Give it a try.
If you are looking to spend less time doing the drills I would recommend advancing your Spanish to a higher level first and then start doing FSI when your Spanish is at an intermediate level. If you know most of the vocabulary and general grammar concepts when you start it you will be able to get through the course much faster and you will get just as much out of it. 3 persons have voted this message useful | |||

I was doing that sort of thing with FSI French. In addition after a few listening sessions I would cut the conversations down to what I had a hard time understanding, and just make an mp3 out of that. You lose context when doing that, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I don't want to spend a full year on only one course; I'm just using FSI (if I use it) to supplement my other methods. But I do hear you about not starting FSI until an intermediate level is reached. Edited by Texas Badlands on 05 December 2015 at 5:39am 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

hi,
at the moment, I'm digitazing FSI and DLI Chinese: I made .csv file with the frames and the vocabulary. I imported them in Anki (and learned how to use it ... ;) ) Of course I didn't finish the work, but it's going well. I split the audio to add to the Anki decks. If you get to a decent level of Spanish you can go through FSI Spanish by doing each lesson two times. At only an hour a day that would take you less than 4 months.

Thanks, but I'm not convinced that I want to do the entire course; I'm not sold on the method for my purposes.

I did a lot of work splitting up FSI recordings. Ultimately, I think the approach in Hard Core FSI is more efficient.
