I have been away from this forum for quite a while( due to other commitments)
and I am sorry to see that active members who made this place a paradise for language lovers, have apparently done the same. Its a pity, as this was a place swarming with life, so its saddening to see it practically dead. My goals for this year: 1) Italian- I will be moving to Italy( Florence) for doctoral studies in a month. A year ago I set a goal for myself to reach at least B1 level by this time, making a jump from that plateau to B2 while I am in Italy. I can say I have reached that goal. I managed to get rid of my language books hoarding habit, and focused on one textbook only " La lingua Italiana per stranieri" ( Katerinov), which is easily the best textbook I have used in any language. Of course, I also tried to immerse myself in the language reading books, newspaper articles, listening to Italian music and TV programs. Right now I am focusing on a specialized terminology. 2) Maintain my English through reading. I have noticed that it is getting a bit rusty, not flowing naturally like it did before( especially when I am speaking). And my accent has, despite all my attempts at improving it, always left a lot to be desired. 3) Flirt with ( Brazilian) Portuguese. I have a Portuguese friend, and he asked me more or less why on Earth am I not learning the REAL Portuguese from Portugal. Its a simple thing, I have a preference for Brazilian accent, it sound more melodic to my ears, it almost " sings" to me, bringing immediate association of football on the beach and carnival, whereas Portuguese Portugal is much more compressed. Some of the ol' folks are at http://forum.language-learners.org, but you are right: it is sad that the activity here at HTLAL has dwindled to almost zero. In fact we get more applications for membership here (probably to read the old messages) than we get new messages.

Thank you Iversen! Apparently there is a lot more activity at that new
forum...but still not as much as in good old days at HTLAL, from what I can remember. Also, I liked the look of HTLAL more( or maybe its just a habit), is not there a way to merge the two forums?( to be honest I do not yet know the reason for exodus from HTLAL. I know it used to crash every now and then, but can not that be fixed?). I guess there is a danger of domain name for this place expiring and not being renewed, sending all the wealth of posts and material down the drain. That would be terrible. I have to learn Dutch to the highest fluency I can by June 2017...I plan on finishing Assimil Italian in the meantime. I'm going to Defqon and want speak both fairly well with the DJs. I have a good grounding in German and Spanish so I don't think it will be too difficult.
It will be my first international trip so I'm focusing on Dutch. I plan on visiting the Netherlands once a year :) 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Noting that some members were still posting in August, I thought I'd give it a go even
though half of the year has already passed. My goals for 2016 concerning languages were 1. improve my Arabic to the A2-level: Basically I just wanted to make it through the language course and get out of the "I can't say or understand anything without a lot of time". I think I succeeded, after all I passed the exam. I must say I was surprised at how hard it was to learn Arabic and make minimal progress. I would attribute those difficulties to the lack of pragmatics. I'm afraid the only way to make it to B1 or B2 will be to live in an Arab country for a few months. 2. start learning Russian, somehow: I wanted to finally start learning this beautiful language with its beautiful speakers but could not plan for it concretely because there was just no opportunity presenting itself to me. However, duolingo and carving out 20 minutes in the morning allowed me to master the alphabet and start my journey. Now I just want to continue learning Russian for the rest of the year at a rather slow pace, perhaps reaching A1.1 or A1.2 by December. Most importantly, I want to remember all letters and their pronunciation for many years to come! That means lots of spaced repetition and deep learning. 3. push my French to a C1-level: This is my job for the rest of the year. An intense language course and the sheer neccessity due to work demands will surely allow me to achieve this goal. So far I have not moved towards it significantly. 4. get educated about foreign language acquisition and figure out why I have this knack of learning foreign languages 1 person has voted this message useful |
