...and what did I do in 2009?
I was in Germany a year ago and spoke some German (but mostly hung out with Anglophones). I went through Assimil again, this time only as a reading exercise (sometimes silently, sometimes aloud). After that, I turned to other reading material such as "Wir werden uns wiederfinden - Die Vertreibung einer Familie" (an Easy Reader by Annelies Scharz) which I read a couple of times, silently and aloud. Old textbooks: "Zum ziel 1" (textbook and grammar), "Tysk nybörjarbok" (by Sven Lide), "Heute bei Beckers" (by Bertil Carell), "Tysk nybörjarbok" (this one by Hugo Gerring), just to get a feel for roughly the same grammar content with other examples. And of course, new content at LingQ. I spoke on Skype a few times. Some statistics: LingQs Created 11596 (words/phrases that I've saved) LingQs Learned 8918 (words/phrases that I've learned over time) Hours of Listening 462.6 Words of Reading 207324 (the LingQ tool counts words in the texts you read, so my books aren't included here) I got a language exchange partner in my town (whom I still see once a week), with whom I practiced my spoken German, grammar, pronunciation and more (and vice versa for her Swedish). I wrote quite a few emails to a new email friend (50/50 Swedish/German). Spreadsheet stats: Listening: 462 hours (probably closer to 462,5 since that's the time value that LingQ has calculated) Reading: 51,5 hours Analysis: 10,5 hours (grammar etc.) Shadowing: 5,5 hours Total: 529,50 hours Average: 87 minutes/day I still have problems finding words, and choosing the right articles (and case endings) when I speak, but I'm improving all the time. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Oops, time for an update.
I had planned to go to Germany in January 2010 but became ill the week before and canceled the trip. I did some L-R with "Krabat" (Ottfried Preußler), skimmed through "Musik im Wandel der Gesellschaft" (Kurt Blaukopf), had a good intention to L-R Herta Müller's "Atemschaukel" but only had the time to listen to it once in German (whilst reading the Swedish translation). I had the occasional grammar session with my German language exchange partner here in town and wrote few emails now and then to my email friend (50/50 Swedish/German). Six Skype sessions - all booked through LingQ. The LingQ statistics are skewed since "last year" means the past 12 months (and I'm about 10 months late with this update...), but my spreadsheet has this info: Listening: 367,75 hours Reading: 16,5 hours Analysis: 10 hours (grammar etc.) Shadowing: 0 hours Total: 394,25 hours Average: 65 minutes/day As you can see, my major activity was listening (podcasts and audiobooks). 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Time for an update. 2011 was one of the worse language years in a long time.
Two (!) German books: "Die Physiker" (Friedrich Dürrenmatt) and "Im Westen nichts Neues" (Erich Maria Remarque), a couple of "Dr House" episodes in German... Listening: 85 hours Reading: 6,75 hours Analysis: 2 hours (grammar etc.) Shadowing: 0 hours Total: 93,75 hours Average: 15 minutes/day It's my ambition to do better this year. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Better than nothing. And in 2013? I got 10.5 hours of listening from television/films, 4.5 hours of reading and an impressive half-hours of shadowing (it must have been Assimil). Ich lese leider nicht so viel/oft als ich möchte (zu viele Sprachen, zu wenig Zeit..), aber ich tue mein Bestes. Im Moment lese ich "F" (von Daniel Kehlmann). Glücklicherweise gibt es viele Bücher in der Bibliothek. Mein nächstes Projekt ist J.R.R. Tolkien - im Juli fand ich in einer Secondhand-Buchhandlung "Die Sagen von Mittelerde" zu einem niedrigen Preis, 15 SEK für diese vier Bände: Das Buch der verschollenen Geschichten vol 1 Das Buch der verschollenen Geschichten vol 2 Silmarillion Handbuch der Weisen von Mittelerde 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Status report for 2014:
Spreadsheets stats: Listening: 1 hour Reading: 14.25 hours Analysis: 12.75 hours (grammar etc.) Shadowing: 9 hours Total: 37 hours Average: 6 minutes/day Books read: F (Daniel Kehlmann) Liebe Schmerz (Doris Dörrie) Der Tote im Fleet (Boris Meyn) ...and finally Assimil German with ease once more, this time during a two-week burst along the lines presented in the thread Assimil Hebrew in two weeks. It was definitely an interesting experiment, and although I already had enough German to begin with I'd still say that I peeled another layer of onion. One-two hours per day for two weeks is something I can handle (at least with some planning ahead), and I'd like to try it with another language, preferably one that is totally alien to me. I also started reading the above mentioned "Das Buch der verschollenen Geschichten vol 1". Media watched: Six episodes of the second season of Weissensee As many of my other languages, I got opportunities to use German at the Polyglot Gathering in Berlin, but the strange thing is that while German is probably one of my stronger reading languages (after Swedish->(Danish/Norwegian)->English), I have huge problems finding the right words, as well as uttering meaningful sentences.
