INTRODUCTION

Catalan is a language of the Romance language, closely related to Occitan. Its origins can be traced to the ancient language Limousin, or "Llemosí".

The first text in Catalan, the "Homílies d'Organyà", was written between 1080 and 1095. It was a series of religious sermons.

Catalan is spoken by 9 million people in Catalunya, el País Valencià, Rousillon, Andorra, la Franja de Ponent and in the small Sardinian city of L'Alguer. Of these 9 million, 6 million live in Catalunya.

USEFULNESS

Ehmmm... Well, it's not really very useful unless you're planning to live in Catalunya, because (unfortunately) most Catalans tend to switch to Spanish when treating business matters. But it is really very useful as an introduction to Romance language, for it is possibly the easiest of them.

CHIC FACTOR

Catalan has the charm of those minoritary Romance languages like Corsican or Occitan. It's really nice to speak!

ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE

Of Catalan language, none. However, Catalan companies such "La Caixa" or "Banc Sabadell" are doing well in business abroad.

TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES

You can travel to Catalunya ;).

SPEAKERS

9 million.

VARIATIONS

Catalan has two main varieties: Western and Eastern Catalan. There are only minor changes in the way some vowels are pronounced and some lexical differences. And Valencian is not a different language from Catalan!

GRAMMAR

As said above, probably the easiest Romance language. It has inherited directly the logicality and grammatical correctness of its "Ancestor Tongue" Latin.

VOCABULARY

Very similar to that of French.

SPELLING

Except for some vowels in the Eastern Dialect, the spelling of Catalan is quite logical and regular.

LINKS

I haven't found any yet, but I'll edit this part when I find them.

Raistlin, I would love to add a profile for Catalan, but I need more material to publish it and I don't know anything about the language outside of Jordi Savall's works.
