How is word order (syntax) best learned? This is a very tricky part of grammar for me, and I have spent the best part of this year trying (like alot of others it seems) to unravel Italian word order. I cant find any (in depth) explanation anywhere, and when there is an explanation, it is about simple parts of word order, which anyone could understand.

So, how do you guys personally learn word order?

In the most of European languages the English word order is correct. So I use just subject - verb - object order and try to guess what other combinations are OK as well. For me it's maybe a bit easier because I know how the word order can change as I know Polish. I see many similarities between word order in Polish and Spanish (I don't know Italian). Some things are explained in grammar books, like what to do with pronouns. I hope my word order doesn't very artificial but I've never really studied it.

By pretending it is a passive sentence. For examples:

English (subject - verb - object)
-) I eat a fish.

Arabic (verb - subject - object)
-) Eaten, by me, that fish.

Japanese (subject - object - verb)
-) By me, that fish is eaten.
