I have always wondered what English sounded like to a person that can't speak it. This guy came up with a brilliant way to answer that question. His question is here:

The reply from a native German speaker is here:

I would love to know what our non-native English speaking forum members think of this. In the first example, the questioner's example of Italian, Mandarin sounds pretty spot on to me.

Thats fantastic! His fake Italian, Spanish and Russian sounded really good! His fake Japanese and French made me flinch though...probably because I know these languages better.
The reply from the German guy is fasinating...sounds like a mix of English, German and the Scandinavian languages. Not necessarily in that order!

I thought it sounded like how Dutch sounds to me -- a lot like american english, only sort of alien.

Yeah, it sounded a lot like Dutch to me as well. I hope non-native English speakers can tell us what they think.

I liked the Chinese and Russian ones...

And the fake English didn't sound anything like Dutch to me (well, that's normal I guess).

It's really weird to think you'll never be able to hear your native language like it sounds to someone not knowing it...

I found another video of the first guy reading fake English (sorry, don't have the link), and it made me realise how English is related to German. To a native English speaker German sounds utterly foreign and unrelated to English, but English does actually sound like it belongs in that family. I suppose I really shouldn't find that surprising, but there you go.

I don't know if any Spanish speaker has responded to that question, but I've
heard many times that English sounds like "guachiguachiguachi".
