A man at work spoke about a certain H. S. Nyberg whom I'd never heard of, so I had to check him up.
According to Wikipedia (Swedish only) Henrik Samuel Nyberg (1889-1974) spoke 28 (!) languages (including his native Swedish) -
he was said to have a very good command of German, French, English and Egyptian Arabic; was able to write, read and speak Spanish, Italian, Russian, Polish Lithuanian and Finnish; read and write Latin, Greek, Hebrew and classical Arabic perfectly; read and write Arameic, Syrian and Ethiopian; Persian, Middle Persian, Mandeic, Armenian, Georgian, Turkish and Sanskrit; understand Kurdish, Balochi, Urdu and Bengali.

If that's true, then I find it all the more amazing considerng the possible lack of resources and certainly technology at that time. Same goes for guys like William Jones and Mezzofanti.
