Hi,
I have been having this puzzle in my mind for months.

I am excited to see so many polyglots registered in the forum (anyone who can speak 5 languages or more is a polyglot to me). As of today, there are 94 members who claim to speak 5 languages or more. But then, I am very disappointed when I check out the list of sound files on this website. Not many of us are willing to record their voices.

I always find listening to the sound clips of polyglots motivational and inspirational. I just wonder why I find so few of them recording their own voices in different languages. Are they shy, or just can't be bothered?

I find it oddly disturbing to hear my own voice, - even in Danish.

I've considering recording my own voice in German here to get pointers on my accent. I've been told I have a very good one, not a typical American one, sometimes people can tell I'm American, sometimes they cannot...in other words it's kind of across the board.

In a word though, I've been too shy to do so.

I hear you all. In fact, I have the same problems.

I do find listening to my own voice very strange, no matter what language it is in. But then, isn't this something we need to overcome eventually as a language learner?

One thing I have tried and is still doing, is to listen to my own voice more. It does help a bit.

I have no problem hearing myself speak in a conversation. However, when it's on tape or radio (it has happened) I don't feel comfortable at all.

As long as I'm not aiming for a career as a singer/actor/et.c. I don't see a need to overcome that feeling. I just avoid being recorded. ;)

Well, while trying to improve my German accent, I recorded my voice a lot to hear for American-isms. Hearing my own voice doesn't bother me much...but hearing it online might creep me out. :-)

Believe me - it doesn't take long to get used to hearing your voice... There was a time when I used to hear mine on
TV quite often. The funniest situations occur when you're in the room where the TV is on and people who are not
watching your face attempt to answer questions you put on TV, mistaking them for live questions directed to
them... :-)
