I heard him speak a word of Italian at a press conference with PM Prodi, but otherwise he's lucky Bruni grew up in

Yes I agree, he doesn't speak English very well. Not only that, but even if his English was more fluid and cohesive, his mannerisms and hand motions and such are not how an American would talk with their hands. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

It's pathetic but from that clip it seems that Bush speaks better Spanish than Sarkozy manages English. In fact, once after hearing Bush speak Spanish I thought he spoke better Spanish than English, probably because he doesn't try to say things in Spanish that are as complicated so he doesn't cause any huge blunders. "Most of are exports are foreign" lol.

I disagree. In my opinion, they should be able to speak at least English. I have a friend who worked at the Norwegian embassy in Mexico when our then prime minister Gro Harlem Brundtland (who by the way obviously speaks fluent English whenever that is called for) came on an official visit to Mexico. Now Mrs. Brundtland did not speak a word of Spanish, but she had had her speech translated into Spanish, and made my friend go through it with her several times, until she could pronounce everything well. In the afternoon she delivered her speech in Spanish, and the next day the papers were full of articles complimenting the Norwegian prime minister on her excellent Spanish. I am sure some of it was flattery, but my friend said that he at lest was deeply impressed. I fail to understand why we as people interested in languages are so willing to forgive our heads of states for being idiots when it comes to languages. We would never be that indulgent if they did not master economics or geography or history. Didn't the presidential candidate Dukakis a few years ago speak fluent Greek and Spanish? It is not like such people do not exist, they just do not seem to be chosen. For some, for me incomprehensible reason, people like George Bush get chosen in stead. 3 persons have voted this message useful |
