A Hungarian whose original name was Pogany. He came to the USA to head the early US Communist Party's Hungarian section in the 1920s. He quickly became influential in the wider party. James Cannon, another leader who disliked him, described Pepper as a "phony, but the most brilliant phony I ever saw. He sparkled like an Arkansas diamond." Pepper apparently came to the USA with no knowledge of English but wrote an English-language pamphlet within about two months of arriving. No doubt he had help, but it seems a case of someone going from zilch knowledge to at least functional competence in a language in a short space of time.
