After some of the discussion here, I took the opportunity to browse a
local used bookshop for foreign language materials. I found a book called
"New German Self Taught," 1959, revised by Erich Berger, Funk &
Wagnells, though with other dates back to 1945. A 1982 edition is listed
at Amazon, though not available.
Now that I've used some materials from the 50's I see Ardaschir's point
about older materials being better. I'm impressed by the general literacy
of the materials. It seems to be written for somebody who knows English
grammer well, and who has literary interests.
The main sections are side-by-side pages with German sentences on the
left and corresponding translations on the right, with the translations
mixing literal and a more idiomatic translation. This is interspersed with
reviews, sections written in the older style Germanic alphabet, and some
literary selections. The facing page materials are labeled "The Language
Phone Method" at the top of each page. The frontspiece indicates there is
a series in various languages.
So, has anybody seen this before? Is this related to the Linguaphone
courses now? I find the facing page format with matching target language
and literal translation very useful. I understand Assimil also uses this
format. Does anybody else use this format?

Language Phone was Funk & Wagnells language course. It was only related to Linguaphone in that Linguaphone was a competitor with a similar name. They made courses for major languages like French, German, Italian, etc. I have the 78rpm records for the French course, but unfortunately not the transcript. I'll have to check for "New French Self Taught" and see if it matches.
