amphises had the bright idea of collecting how to say 'audiobook' in as many languages as possible. I think the topic deserves its own thread, so - here it is. The purpose of this thread is to make finding audiobooks easier; the list of resources also has links to free and commercial audiobook sites.

Many languages have more than one way to say 'audiobook'; any which are in actual use are suitable, not merely the most common, though that can be indicated with a * when known. Nota bene: frequently, 'audiobook' or 'audio book' is used in non-English languages too... but using alternative words sometimes leads to better results, and usually cuts down on the number of irrelevant results.

Similarly, 'unabridged' is an extremely important word, at least if your purpose in getting an audiobook is to listen-read it.

Please chime in with any other ways to say audiobook and unabridged!

Audiobook:

Afrikaans: Oudioboeke.
Arabic: 'الكتاب المسموع'
Basque: Entzuteko liburua (use the form "Entzuteko liburuak"), Audio-liburua (izan) {izan: In my opinion, the most accurate term is "Entzuteko liburua" which literally means "a book to be listened to". (but Audio-liburua is also used, which is a literal translation of audiobook, but seems rather forced to me)}.
Bulgarian: Аудиокнига (sennin) {sennin: /audiokniga/ is the Bulgarian and apparently also the Russian word for audiobook.}
Catalan: audiollibre
Chinese (Traditional, Mandarin - 中文): 有聲書 jianti / 有聲小說 {kealist says this term works better} (amphises, kealist)
Chinese (Simplified - 简体): 有声书 fanti / 有声小说 / 有声读物 * {有声读物 is the recommendation of a native speaker; for the other two terms, kealist says 有声小说 works better than 有声书} (amphises, kealist, Z.J.J)
Czech/Slovak: Audiokniha, mluvená kniha, zvuková kniha (Vlad, kyknos) {kyknos: In Czech, "audiokniha" is correct and often used, but "zvuková kniha" or "mluvená kniha" is also used. In many bookstores including e-shops, the departement selling audiobooks is called "mluvené slovo" (literally 'spoken word').}
Danish: lydbog
Dutch: hoorboek/luisterboek/audioboek (Gilgamesh)
English: audiobook, audio book
Esperanto: aŭdlibro
Farsi/Persian: کتاب صوتی
Finnish: Äänikirja {"sound book"} (badger2)
French: livre audio * / livre parlé / livraphone / lu par / audilivre / audiobook / audiolivre / livre parlant / livre parlé / livre sonore / livre lu /livre-à-écouter
(Gilgamesh, atamagaii)
German: Hörbuch * / Hoerbuch / Hörspiel / Hoerspiel / Audiobuch (Vlad, Gilgamesh, Atamagaii)
Greek: Ακούστε ένα βιβλίο * / ηχοβιβλία (Gilgamesh)
Hungarian: Hangoskönyv * / Audió könyv, Audiokönyv (Vlad, Kisani)
Icelandic: Hljóðbók (PaulLambeth) {PaulLambeth: Hljóðbækur is the plural, although Google's Icelandic version is great at looking up all manner of forms. My source is http://www.forlagid.is/?cat=47, and that it means literally "sound book".}
Italian: audiolibro (amphises)
Japanese: オーディオ本 / 朗読 {pronounced 'roudoku': roudoku is recitation, reading aloud - an audiobook is one type of roudoku} (amphises, atamagaii)
Korean: 오디오북
Low German/Plattdüütsch: Höörbook
Malay: Buku audio
Norwegian (bokmål and nynorsk): Lydbok
Plattdüütsch: Höörbook
Polish: audioksiążka / audio-książka / książka audio / audiobooki {plural form} / książka dźwiękowa {rarely used} / książka czytana {rarely used} (rafal)
Portuguese: livro falado / audiolivro / livro em MP3 (atamagaii, luhmann)
Russian: Аудиокнига (Vlad)
Spanish: audiolibro / audio libro / libro hablado (amphises, aru-aru)
Swedish: Ljudbok / talbok / CD-bok * (JD, atamagaii, eoinda) {See "Swedish Notes" below.}
Turkish: sesli kitap * / mp3 kitap (alexptrans)
Vietnamese: sách nói
Yiddish: קלאַנג-בוך klang-bukh {literally sound book} * / audio-bukh / audio-sefer (vuisminebitz).

Unabridged:

English: unabridged
French: texte intégral (LLF)
German: ungekürzte
Italian: integrale
Mandarin Chinese: 未刪節(未删节) / 未刪減(未删减). There may be some others. The former is mainly for books (where 節/节 refers to a section of a chapter), the latter for films. (aru-aru)
Portuguese: texto integral / texto completo / obra integral / obra completa (luhmann)
Spanish: "audiolibro íntegro but you may more luck with the simpler audiolibro completo" (Andy E). Also: "I found on one of the website from commercial site forum that if the book was abridged, it said, "Abreviada" and if it was full, it didn't say anything." (Emerald)

Abridged (avoid this!):
English: abridged
French: résumé
German: gekürzte
Spanish: abreviada

'Radio plays' (these probably have multiple actors, sound effects, and lots of changes, but there's a chance they'll be ok)
Chinese: 廣播劇
Czech: rozhlasová hra
Danish: hørespil
Dutch: hoorspel / radiodrama / luisterspel / radiotoneel
Finnish: Kuunnelma
English: radio drama / audio drama / audio theater / radio serial
French: théâtre radiophonique / radiothéâtre / feuilleton radiophonique / feuilleton radiodiffusé / radio-feuilleton / radioroman
German: Hörspiele
Hebrew: תסכית
Hungarian: hangjáték, rádiójáték (pirx)
Icelandic: Útvarpsleikrit
Italian: serial radiofonico
Japanese: ラジオドラマ / Drama CD {Drama CD is a kind of a play, usually based on a popular manga.}
Korean: 라디오 드라마
Norwegian: Hørespill
Polish: Słuchowisko
Portuguese: radionovela (luhmann)
Russian: Радиоспектакль
Spanish: radioteatro / radio drama
Swedish: Radioteater
Walloon: pîce radiofonike / pîce pol radio / pîce djouwêye al radio
Welsh: drama radio

Other words that may be useful for finding audiobooks in various languages:

English: books on tape, recorded books, wordhaven (atamagaii)
German: Lesung {Reading} / ungekürzte Lesung {unabridged reading} / Gert Westphal {a name} / Rufus Beck {another name} / gelesen.von {read by} (atamagaii)
Japanese: 朗読 roudoku / Drama CD, sheetz (atamagaii)
Polish: audiobook.pl / Gazeta Wyborcza (atamagaii)
Russian: akniga {??} / abook / abook-club / audiobook.ru / abook-club.ru / audiobook_rus (atamagaii)
Spanish: voz humana {human voice; useful for avoiding computer-read audiobooks, of which there are _many_; notably, avoid the AT&T voices, such as Rosa, and the Loquendo ones, such as Jorge; both are computer-generated}. (aru-aru)
Swedish: Astrid Lindgren {a name} (atamagaii)

Keywords useful for finding audiobooks in multiple languages:
uz-translations, veryCD, Logos wordtheque (atamagaii)

Also, some of the site names above are used by more than one source - they may be worth googling.

for polish audiobooks add "+chomik" to your search query.
Let's try it. Google query: "+chomik +audiobooki"
http://chomikuj.pl/Chomik.aspx?id=gosia77
http://karolciaa2811.chomikuj.pl/Chomik.aspx?id=SANDEMO&sid= 15 this link is very good, i wish i found one like that for other languages :)
http://www.crazy.chomikuj.pl/Chomik.aspx?id=Napflionka
http://www.kamikaze.chomikuj.pl/Chomik.aspx?id=Leenusia (then go to audiobooki)
http://www.chomikuj.pl/Chomik.aspx?id=libellule&sid=116
http://wodafone.chomikuj.pl/Chomik.aspx?id=bellonik&sid=50
http://www.chomikuj.pl/Chomik.aspx?id=danaa&sid=11
it's very easy to find polish audiobooks. With a little more digging you can find them in other languages as well. Adding +chomik when you search for other materials such as courses or e books also yields good results.

more keywords: a-booki, audioksiążki, audio ksiazki, książki do słuchania, bajki (for childrens' stories), audiobook, audiobooks (they will give you different hits)

for those who don't know any Polish but would like to search these sites here are a few basic keywords you can use with +chomik
francuski - French
hiszpanski - Spanish
niemiecki - German
języki obce - foreign languages
materiały do nauki - study materials
kursy - courses
słowniki - dictionaries

Swedish notes
eoinda wrote:
For swedish "ljudbok" and "talbok" is absolutely correct but I would like to add "CD-bok" as well that is the most frequently used one were I live.

cypherpunks wrote:
In Swedish Ljudbok and Talbok are slightly different.
Ljudbok: normal audiobooks, available commercially and in libraries.
Talbok: audiobooks produced for the vision-impaired, and unavailable for "normal" persons in libraries.

Many books are only available as "talböcker" and not as "ljudböcker". They are read in a clear voice and correspond very well to the written books they are based on (i.e. exact transcripts). They are often read in a neutral, emotionless or "boring" voice, with no dramatization or music. Many of them are available on tape or in a digital format called DAISY.

The production and distribution of talböcker and (the lack of) compensation for authors are regulated in law. To borrow them from libraries you must be registered as a talbokslånare (talbok borrower). However, the actual requirement on the disability is very lax. It basically boils down to your own judgement. Examples are bad eye-sight, too weak to hold a book comfortably (it can even be temporary). Being a non-native in itself speaker is not considered sufficient. Basically, it's enough to answer "yes" to the question "do you have any kind of reading disability?".

Basque notes:
Some useful Basque words that show up when searching for audiobooks - now with correct glosses, thanks to izan.
- Audioa = audio.
- Liburu horretan = on that book.
- Entzun = to listen.
- Entzungaiak = things that can be listened to.
- Entzuteko literatura= literature to be listened to.

Sites - commercial:

See the commercial audiobook sites thread.

Sites - gratis:

See the free legal audiobooks thread.

Sites - unknown:

A site (I know nothing about it, being unable to read Polish, other than that it appears to require registration, and registration appears to be disabled):
http://www.audioksiazki.org (rufus)

http://englishtips.org/(English)(atamagaii).
The site is primarily in Russian; it appears to have a very large number of audiobooks and graded readers in English.

Greylib(several languages)(DaraghM)
This site has audiobooks in several languages; it's associated with uz-translations.

verycd(several languages)(atamagaii).
The site is in Chinese.

voiceblog.jp(Japanese)(atamagaii).
The site is in Japanese, and somewhat tricky to navigate.

uz-translations(several languages)(atamagaii).
The site is in Russian.

Sites: Free language classes:

LifeHacker had a couple of good posts on audiobooks a while ago: (--SEmper)

iTunes has a whole section of podcasts devoted to languages. To get there, just head to the iTunes Music Store, then go to Podcast -> Education -> Language Courses. Most of them are free. (--SEmper)

Open Culture Foreign Languages.(--SEmper)

And finally:
Beauty is in the ear of the beholder. (atamagaii)

I'm a bit ashamed to admit this since I am a native Chinese but I didn't know what the word for audiobook is until I looked it up :).

Unfortunately, I don't speak Chinese. Am I reading it correctly as "有聲書" is how to say audiobook in Mandarin with traditional characters, and 有声书 is how it's written in simplified?

atamagaii: What do you mean by writing "GazetaWyborcza"? That's the name of a daily.

Polish:
audioksiążka, audio-książka
książka audio
audiobooki (plural)
książka dźwiękowa (rarely)
książka czytana (rarely)

or try http://www.audioksiazki.org.

GazetaWyborcza returns a lot of audiobook rars on eMule ;), I see Goethe and some other Polish words that I don't recognize.

audiobook.pl returns a lot of links too. I am now downloading Henryk Adam Aleksander Pius Sienkiewicz's Quo Vadis and Krzyżacy, there are translations on Gutenberg. Thanks! BTW, are those works good for Listening-Reading?

For Spanish, "libro hablado" seems to get better results than libro audio
Also, avoid computer generated audiobooks, "voz humana" stands for human voice
