Anyone know much about Chen Yinke 陳寅恪 ? Tried to do a search on this site and didn't come up with anything
Taken from Wikipedia Mongolian Language, Tibetan Language, Manchu Language, Japanese, Sanskrit, English, French, German, Tripitaka, Persian, Turkic Language, Tangut script, Latin, Greek and so on, especially Sanskrit and Tripitaka. I don't believe Tripitaka is a language. It seems to me that that's the name for the Buddhist scriptures, which were written in Pali or Sanskrit.

Given it is wikipedia, so the information may not be exactly accurate especially as a translation from Chinese. I also copied my quote from a list of things that he studied or managed which is not necessarily language. If it were changed from "Turkic Language" to "Turkic languages" it would read better. But they are giveways to what? That he is not a well respected Chinese scholar (at least in Taiwan)? Why would you think that he is a polyglot? Just because some lousy self-styled encyclopædia written by unidentified half-wits says so?
I don't know which languages this person knew, or how well. The "encyclopædia" article is obviously unreliable and worthless on this question. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Because he is a respected scholar on the Tang period that I have been referred to by a Taiwanese art history scholar. I did not learn of him from wikipedia. I apologize for not making that clear initially. Most of the biographical information I have seen is in Chinese aside from that unfortunate wikipedia article

Actually, the shoddy English version of the article seems translated very literally from the Chinese.
"通过留学期间的学习，具备了阅读蒙、藏、 、日、梵、英、法、德和巴利、波斯、突厥 西夏、拉丁、希腊等十余种语言的能力，尤 梵文和巴利文。夏曾佑曾對他感慨說道：“ 能讀外國書，很好；我只能讀中國書，都讀 了，沒得讀了。”" As you can see, the Chinese makes no claims about "turkic language" or "tangut script", they refer to the languages themselves. 1 person has voted this message useful |
