There are several Russian bookstores in Paris, all quite different from one another.

LIBRAIRIE DU GLOBE
www.librairieduglobe.com
67 Boulevard de Beaumarchais
75003 PARIS
tel. +33.01.42.77.36.36
Metro Bastille
This is the largest bookshop in Paris for Russian books. It used to be in a better location in the Carrefour de Buci in the Quartier Latin, but now that the Soviet Union has gone the way of the dodo, they must not receive any more subsidies from them. The bookshop is modern, big and well-stocked although the shopping attendants are quite surly and arrogant.

LIBRAIRIE DES EDITEURS REUNIS
11, rue de la Montagne Sainte-Geneviève
75005 PARIS
tEl. +33.01.43.54.74.46
These guys are famous for begin the publishers of Soviet dissident Solzhenitsin. The bookshop sells mostly white Russian stuff, a lot of it in old church Russian. The ambience is intriguing. One day I went there and it felt like the owner had just hanged himself in the back of the shop. Ah the slavic soul. They almost smiled when they finally got rid of the Complete Works of Stalin on me - I bought all 20 or so volumes for a song.

SAINT-PETERSBOURG
16, rue de Miromesnil
75008 PARIS

Intriguing place. The shop window is filled with rusty pre-revolutionary nostalgia. You need to ring a dozen times, then explain who you are and what you want, finally they let you in. The shop is filled with dusty medals and portraits of the tsar courtiers, and litterally has piles of books to the ceiling. The Strand bookstore in New York is clean like a chip factory in comparison. An old guy tells you not to touch anything. Tell me what you want, he says. I dared a 'Etymological dictionary of Russian'. He disappeared in a mouldy cellar, then came back with a nice book which I bought. "I sell a lot by correspondence" he explained.

RUSSOPHILE BOUQUINISTE NEAR ACADEMIE FRANCAISE
Once in Librairie du Globe I began chatting with a Professor of Russian at a local University. Real nice guy. He explained that there is a bouquiniste, one of the people who have been selling second-hand books on the side of river Seine for the last 400 years, that speclializes in Russian book. He told me not to say anybody mentionned this as this man is very suspicious of anything being said about him. I obliged and went. He has two stalls in front of the Institut de France or Académie Française, on the other side of the Louvre along River Seine. If you are into Russian and are in the area, check it out.

GIBERT JEUNE LANGUES ETRANGERES
Large student-oriented bookstore on Place Saint-Michel with a good section on Russian. Make sure you get the right "Gibert Jeune", they have half a dozen scattered around the square. The one you need is specialized in foreign languages and spreads over 4 floors. That's right, 4 floors! Carlos the Jackal bombed one of their stores in the 1980's, and Algerian terrorists exploded a subway car under the square in the 1990s. This being said this is a very endearing part of Paris and always teeming with activity.

There are other bookstores and publishers that sell books in or about Russian in Paris, but I have not visited any of them so far:

    * L'AGE D'HOMME
      5, rue Férou 75006 PARIS
      tél. 01.55.42.79.79 fax 01.40.51.71.02

    * CENTRE POUCHKINE
      61, rue Boissière 75116 PARIS
      tél. 01.44.05.64.20 fax 01.44.05.64.21

    * Librairie de l'INSTITUT D'ETUDES SLAVES
      9, rue Michelet 75006 PARIS
      tél. 01.43.26.5.89 fax 01.43.26.16.23

    * ATTICA
      64, rue Folié Méricourt 75011 PARIS
      tél. 01.49.29.27.27

I hope this will prove useful to students of Russian who visit Paris!
