Trying to stick to the subject line (and slightly move the topic from Ziad Fazah, who has been discussed to death), we have couple of members on this forum that speak a lot of languages:
http://how-to-learn-any-language.com/forum/member-language-p rofile.asp As you say, a low bar makes it a lot easier to say that you "speak" the language, as is probably the case with a lot of multilingual kids (e.g. the Vietnamese-American girl mentioned recently), people who have travelled a lot (being able to "get by") and so on. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Even if he had access to materials for all of these languages, I highly doubt any of it would have given him more than a working knowledge. I don't recall him ever saying he was fluent in these languages (I may be mistaken), but being "able to speak" them is quite a different thing, because there are no specific criteria other than having at least some knowledge of whatever language it is you're trying to speak. I think it's astounding how confident he is. Saying he can learn all of the world's languages in such a short time.

I watched the Chilean TV show.Ziad Fazah was a hoax.He didn't understand Russian,Chinese,Farsi.Probably he can speak a few languages and he can say hi in 54 languages.

When i first heard about him i was excited. It gave me this "nothing is impossible" feeling, and really encouraged me to learn just the few languages on my list.
When he did 54, i thought, i can do 8. Then i saw the aforementioned video on youtube. And was disappointed to say the least. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I don't know if he's a flat out fraud. He probably was more familiar with those languages when he actively studied them but as time went by it wasn't easy for him to maintain all those languages so eventually he started to forget them.
