Some time ago, I created for my personal learning (i.e. reading & listening foreign texts, saving &
reviewing vocab) a software package named "Learning with Texts (LWT)". The tool was inspired by Stephen Krashen's principles in Second Language Acquisition, Steve Kaufmann's LingQ system and ideas from Khatzumoto, published at "AJATT - All Japanese All The Time". I uploaded the software now to Sourceforge and documented it. The software is 100 % free, open source, and in the public domain. You may do with it what you like: improve it, change it, publish an improved version, etc. To run LWT, you need a good web browser (Firefox, Chrome, Safari) and a local web server (Apache) with PHP and mySQL. An easy way to install a local web server are preconfigured packages like XAMPP (Win, Mac, Linux) or MAMP (Mac). Read more about it: http://lwt.sourceforge.net/ I hope you'll enjoy it. |

I am enjoying it. Thank you very much. I am very intrigued about how useful it can be. One of the things I like is an easy way to see how much of any given text (words) I know and don't know. As I try it out some more, I'll provide some further comments. Suggestion: The installation is a bit more than a lot of users will be familiar with. Not quite for the faint-hearted. It does work as you describe but I think a number of potential users would find the installation and initial use a bit challenging. What I would suggest is that you find one or more "ordinary" computer users and, while you watch, have them install and use your software. Version 0.6 of "Learning with Texts (LWT)" is available now.
I have also created and uploaded a screencast (5 min. long) that shows some of the features of LWT using simple Chinese texts as examples: http://lwt.sourceforge.net/#screencasts The installation is not very easy, but in my opinion not so complicated that an average user will not tackle it. This may be a stupid question, but I watched your screencast and I still haven't figured what your program does and in what way it's different from other language learning programs.
I saw that you can look up words, but there are lots of other plugins that offer this functionality. For example, https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/glo befish/ - Globefish and http://moji.mozdev.org/ - Moji and many others. How about a short feature list? Doitsujin on 09 July 2011 |
I have been trying out LWT. My comments so far are: 1. It seems to be well designed and well implemented. 2. It is relatively complicated for casual computer users in that it uses a server running on your computer, as well as the application. The install process will challenge some users. I have suggested a more-easily-understood set of instructions. 3. I like how you can set your knowledge of each word on a scale of 1-5, which shows up as different colours right in the text. 4. Entering text, audio and the translation of words is very easy. 5. The integrated audio player works very well. 6. It handles multiple languages very well. 7. I think it is well worth trying. I'm intrigued with its functionality and trying to figure out just how to use it most effectively. I think it has good possibilities. tommus on 09 July 2011 |

You should advertise on lingq.com.
For selecting expression it would be great to have a + to add word by word and this way selecting expressions with more than 6 words. Also a minus sign would allow to select expressions separated like some German or dutch verbs. Clicking the minus would eliminate one by one the words between the 2 parts. I just get some troubles.
I added a new french language for testing. I noticed only the last language created can be deleted. I tried to add a first french text, La métamorphose from Kafka. I got a Words Total of zero and when trying to read - I did not see any text. I thought maybe the text is too long - so I tried with one of the 46 pages - then with the first paragraph - but the resutl did not change - Words Total zero and no reading possible. I also tried to add the text in the preexisting French language but got the same result. I also noticed the french ' in qu' c' j' are not taken - those ' are not ponctuation but part of those words - the ' is never a ponctuation in french in stead we use "xxxx" or something looking like <<xxxx>>. By the way On donne du sang mais on fait des dons de sang and il y a pas longtemps should be il n'y a pas longtemps. I am sorry I do not publish on sourceforge forum because I am not registred there and I do not know where to post in bug or in help. But feel free to copy my remarks there. Languages can only be deleted if there are no words and texts in that language.
Please make your texts not TOO LONG (max. 10 book pages). Please send your current language settings for French and your text (first paragraph) to M8R- rmip0s@mailinator.com -- I'll have a look at it. What server do you use? XAMPP Win/Mac or other?
If you want to make ' a part of a word: please add ' in RegExp Word Characters. Maybe you must then also replace different kinds of apostrophes in the texts to ': try to set Character Substitutions: ´='|`='|’='|‘=' Otherwise you will have different kinds of ' in your words/terms which may result in double entries... I think that quite a few potential users of LWT will be scared away by things that they are not familiar with and don't understand. For example, why use the strange URL http://t.co/4LhCvuG which immediately redirects to: http://lwt.sourceforge.net/#installwin? The Upgrade instructions are confusing to me: Step 1: Backup your database learning-with-texts with phpMyAdmin. [Comment: This would be a good place to explain where to find and execute phpMyAdmin, and just how to do the required back-up. Most users have never done anything like this before.] Step 2: Backup the directory .../xampp/htdocs/lwt/. [Do you mean: Copy the directory lwt to another location.?] Step 3: Unpack the downloaded ZIP archive lwt_version.zip. Step 4: Copy the unpacked files and sub-directories to .../xampp/htdocs/lwt/, BUT COPY NOT: (1) the database connection parameters .../xampp/htdocs/lwt/connect.inc.php and (2) the media sub-directory .../xampp/htdocs/lwt/media. [Comment] What do you mean by "BUT COPY NOT"? Do you mean: Step 3: ... After unpacking these files, delete the file: lwt/connect.inc.php and lwt/media. Then copy this new lwt directory to .../xampp/htdocs/ Is that what you mean? Perhaps you should have two separate downloads: one for normal first-time installs, and a different one for upgrades from an earlier installation that does not contain the two files that you want to be deleted. Thanks. EDIT: I just Upgraded from 0.6 to 0.7 using what I described above and it did not work. I tried copying my backed-up file connect.inc.php and the directory media to the new installed directory. That didn't work either. Using version 0.6, I tried to import terms but could not. I tried TAB separation and then # separation. I only used two columns: word#translation. I get the error:
*** Error: Nothing to upload *** What does "Don't import" mean? Do you put something in a column to ignore that entry? Thanks. EDIT: I figured it out. If you try to enter only terms that are already in the database, you get the error *** Error: Nothing to upload ***. There probably should be a way to upload terms that are already in the database. This will be improved in the near future. Upgrading in 3 simple steps: 1. Unpack the ZIP archive. 2. You show database updates for versions up to 0.5. Are there different update instructions for versions 0.6 and 0.7?

No, the database has changed only from version 0.4 to 0.5 and from 0.5 to 0.6. I don't expect db changes in the future. I have now done that twice, each time from 0.6 to 0.7. I then re-started the server. Both times, I got the following error: Warning: include(connect.inc.php) [function.include]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in C:\xampp\htdocs\lwt\index.php on line 11 Warning: include() [function.include]: Failed opening 'connect.inc.php' for inclusion (include_path='.;C:\xampp\php\PEAR') in C:\xampp\htdocs\lwt\index.php on line 11 DB select error How does the media directory and the connect.inc.php file get rebuilt? Do you have to use those from the previous version? Sorry for the problems. Maybe my English is/was not clear enough. What I wanted to say: KEEP (do not overwrite) ... (1) the OLD database connection parameters .../xampp/htdocs/lwt/connect.inc.php and (2) the whole OLD media sub-directory .../xampp/htdocs/lwt/media. and UPGRADE everything else from the downloaded ZIP archive. About the update, I do not understand why do you ask not overwriting the file : connect.inc.php ?
If there is a new version of a file - you have to replace the former version by the new one. If there is no new version of a file - it will change nothing to replace the former version by an exactly identical new file. And this makes the update process look a bit more easy. About my trouble with new french texts - The problem comes from the french letter à. As soon as this letter is in a text - this text is not accepted. Does a french text with à work by you ?
It could come from the standard coding of french which is not unicode but ansi on 1 byte See http://www.docmemo.com/informatique/codesansi.php The order of the letters looks the same. More tests A one letter text containing à alone is accepted. As soon as à is use in normal context it is not accepted, giving a zero word text. But if I put a point behind the à then the text is accepted - for example if I put à. la maison. this is accepted and gives 2 sentences and 3 words. The same without the space between the point and the L in LA gives 2 words la and maison. Strange indeed. Since it looks like a sentence separation problem I delete the Exceptions Split Sentences - I do not know the goal of this part ? No effect. I work on a french windows with firefox and tried IE.
My local server is easyphp in french. I try to set easyphp in English - first it did not look to change anything but now it becomes more and more strange - I am not sure it comes because of this language change. The fact is that when checking I still get a 1 sentence but zero word BUT if I read the text it is ok BUT there is a question mark replacing the à. By the way this question mark should make it 2 sentences. So far when I checked and got a zero words there, the text was empty - so in many tests I only consider the result of the check without trying to insert. Maybe people could try to create a french text with a à and tell if they have some troubles. Maybe the special characters should not be alone but part of a word - I just tried the following sentence ; Il faut bien é il accepte where é should be et in correct french but this is for testing. The result is the same Il faut bien ? il accepte (1 sentence 4 words). There is no such problem with one letter word like y a. Michel1020 on 11 July 2011 |

Version 0.6 seems to be running correctly for me. The only things that don't look quite right are associated with XAMPP. Normally it is not running when I start my computer. To start it, I either double-click the XAMPP Control icon that it installed, or run xampp-control from the command line in C:\xampp\. In either case, I get a pop-up window warning saying: "XAMPP Component Status Check failure [3]. Current directory: C:\xampp. Run this program only from your XAMPP root directory." In either case, it starts the XAMPP control application, and starts Apache and MySQL. Then I open http://127.0.0.1/lwt/ in Firefox, and it works fine.
However, I have tried a number of times to upgrade from 0.6 to 0.7, with no success. Now I tried upgrading from 0.6 to 0.8, also with no success. This is what I do, and what happens: 1. With version 0.6, I copy c:\xampp\htdocs\lwt to a safe place. 2. In c:\xampp\htdocs\lwt, I delete everything except the directory "media" and the file "connect.inc.php". 3. I unzip 0.8 into a directory and delete the directory "media" and the file "connect.inc.php". 4. I copy everything that remains in the 0.8 directory to c:\xampp\htdocs\lwt 5. I start xampp which starts apache and mysql. 6. I open http://127.0.0.1/lwt/ in Firefox. 7. It refuses to start and displays: DB connect error 8. I copy the old 0.6 files back to ...\lwt and everything works fine. Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong? tommus on 12 July 2011 |
Well, after a lot of work, I figured out that lwt was not picking up the password change in mysql. By setting the password manually, 0.8 lwt opened the home page but gave the error; Invalid query: select StValue as value from settings where StKey = 'currentlanguage' I can't figure that out. Please delete your old installation and make a complete reinstall with LWT version 0.8.1 (just released) Do not change the install location (c:\xampp), do not change/set the db password. I followed the instructions exactly, except that I did not create a new database in mysql. I had already taken a lot of time to import data including a 145,000 word pairs dictionary. Seems your database is created with an old installation before 0.6. I just tried EasyPHP on WinXP. Downloaded it and installed it. Copied the LWT zip content to C:\Programs\EasyPHP-5.3.6.0\www\lwt Changed the file connect.inc.php to: ------------- $server = "127.0.0.1"; $userid = "root"; $passwd = ""; $dbname = "learning-with-texts"; ------------- Started phpMyAdmin via http://127.0.0.1:8888/home/mysql/ Imported dbinstall.sql successfully Started LWT: http://127.0.0.1:8888/lwt Everything works fine. With the default French language settings, French texts like from lefigaro.fr website can be easily stored (copy&paste) and used for learning. See screenshot: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/62/screenshotans.jpg/ No à-Problems or other problems at all. I use Firefox. IE8 will not work. IE9 maybe, but not installable under XP. I started with 0.6 and never used an earlier version. That import fixed most things. Everything seems to be there. However, in My Texts and My Terms, the dropdown menu for Filter Language is fixed on French. Even though it shows all the other 4 languages plus filter off, it goes back to French no matter what you select. So I cannot get to anything but French. My Languages and My Statistics show all five language and the correct details. tommus on 12 July 2011 |

It looks like IMPORTING dbupgrade.0.5.sql hardwired the Language to French (1) as in the last two lines of that file.
INSERT INTO `settings` VALUES ('currentlanguage', '1'); INSERT INTO `settings` VALUES ('currenttext', '1'); So I changed that file to: INSERT INTO `settings` VALUES ('currentlanguage', '5'); INSERT INTO `settings` VALUES ('currenttext', '5'); So it is now hardwired to Dutch, but at least I have my Dutch texts and words back. It seems your 0.6 version is broken somehow. I would download 0.6 again, and install it (without media and connect.inc.php). If the database is really created with 0.6 - it should then run properly. But it would be MUCH BETTER to start from scratch and install 0.8.1 and import your words and texts again. Please understand that this software is still BETA, and LWT is not created by a group of professional software developers. It's a hobby project and I am the only one ;-) In the next weeks there are only a few things to be done (new tests, some improvements, some documentation, and of course bug fixing), then version 1.0 will be released. lwtproject on 13 July 2011 |
My version 0.6 is working perfectly. Version 0.8.1 is working perfectly except that I can't change languages. So I am going to keep 0.6 for now and do a completely fresh install with 1.0 when it becomes available. I fully understand that the software is still BETA. I'm just trying to contribute to what I believe is a wonderful product. The more I use it, the better I like it. It is so easy and fast to use, and has wonderful features. I would really like to understand why you are unable to change the language... How many tables do you have (Start myPhpAdmin, click on Database: learning-with-texts) ?? What version are you running: 0.8.1 or 0.6? It's displayed at the bottom of the Home screen. What kind of errors do you get? lwtproject on 13 July 2011 |
When I downloaded my original version on July 9, I clicked on the "Looking for the latest version?" and what said version 0.6. I put it in a directory called version 0.6. I now see that the download was version 0.5. The only thing I can think of was that the latest download line, even though it said version 0.6, was still version 0.5. So you were right earlier when you suspected I was using version 0.5. I deleted everything. I deleted the database also. I started from scratch. I installed version 0.8.2. I created the database, etc, exactly as your instructions say. LWT could not connect to the database. I deleted everything and tried again with version 6.0. It connected to the database. I could see all the languages, but it was hard wired to French and would not change for texts and words. I deleted everything. I started again with version 0.5. It works perfectly. I then tried to update 0.5 to 0.6, using your procedures. Same problem. Hardwired to French. I am running Windows 7, 64 bit. Maybe my registry is corrupted. To answer your other question, the database has 7 tables. In any case, I am happy with version 0.5. It is working wonderfully. tommus on 14 July 2011 |

please read the new FAQ: http://lwt.sourceforge.net/info.htm#faq - http://lwt.sourceforge.net/info.htm#faq --- The above URL is of course not working! --- "LWT could not connect to the database." ---> Either the database (MySQL) is not running, or the database connection parameters in ../htdocs/lwt/connect.inc.php are wrong. Please check/correct the database connection parameters and/or start MySQL. Today I released 0.9. There are not so many things to come until 1.0. Maybe you should give it another try. Did you change something (DB password or other settings) on the XAMPP screens? You should not do this. I'm really enjoying LWT. I especially like the easy way to see the words you don't yet know.
I have a couple of suggestions about marking words to "ignore". After I have either learned or added all the normal words in a text, the remaining words are usually all proper names, such as place names, people's names, or other-language words. They remain highlighted in blue. I'd like to be able to easily mark all of these as "ignore". I recommend a second button beside "I KNOW ALL", such as "IGNORE ALL" that would mark all remaining words in blue as "ignore". As well, all single letters should automatically be ignored, with the option of manually entering single letter words. Some languages, especially Dutch and German, like to combine words into long words. It would be nice if you could highlight part of such a compound word, and have the translation of the highlighted part only, and to be able to directly provide a translation of just the highlighted part. tommus on 16 July 2011 |

I am having trouble with the program. When I start up Xampp I get the message: "ERROR:
Status Check Failure [3] This program must run from your XAMPP root directory." Despite this message, the Xampp program starts. I next click start for both Apache and MySql. It says running next to MySql, but does not say anything next to Apache. When I then go to my web browser and type in http://localhost I get the message "Oops! This link appears to be broken." I believe that I followed all of the instructions up until that point. Any advise on what I can do to fix the problem is appreciated. Thank you. Chris Phillips chrisphillips71 on 17 July 2011 |
I get the same error message but it does not seem to be very important. To start Apache, click on the SCM button (upper right). A new window opens. Then right click on Apache to start it. From that same window, you can set up Apache and MySQL to start automatically when the computer starts. I hope that works for you. I use XAMPP under WinXP, and it works as described. I don't know the reason for this message.
Maybe you should uninstall XAMPP and try EasyPHP. http://www.easyphp.org/ Step 1: Go to http://www.easyphp.org/download.php. Step 2: Download the EasyPHP Setup EXE (currently EasyPHP 5.3.6.1, from now written as: 5.x.y.z). Step 3: Install the downloaded EasyPHP-5.x.y.z-setup.exe into C:\Program Files\EasyPHP-5.x.y.z. Step 4: Go to http://sourceforge.net/projects/lwt and download the latest zip archive lwt_v_x_y.zip. Step 5: Copy the downloaded zip archive lwt_v_x_y.zip into the directory www below the EasyPHP installation directory, i.e. C:\Program Files\EasyPHP-5.x.y.z\www. Step 6: Double-click on the zip archive to open it, and unzip everything into a new folder C:\Program Files\EasyPHP-5.x.y.z\www\lwt. Step 7: The zip archive C:\Program Files\EasyPHP-5.x.y.z\www\lwt_v_x_y.zip may be deleted. Step 8: Go to C:\Program Files\EasyPHP-5.x.y.z\www\lwt. Edit the file connect.inc.php to <?php $server = "127.0.0.1"; $userid = "root"; $passwd = ""; $dbname = "learning-with-texts"; ?> Step 9: Start EasyPHP via the Windows Start Menu. Step 10: Start phpMyAdmin (go to http://127.0.0.1:8888/home/mysql/). Select your language and click on "Import" (at the top). I see that, in the upgrade instructions, you avoided the problem of overwriting "connect.inc.php" by not including it at all, but using the one from the previous installation. Following that procedure partially worked, but all the functionality in the Read window: pop-up translations, the blue Word window, etc. failed to work for me at all. By following the original install instructions of renaming "connect_xampp.inc.php" to "connect.inc.php", and inserting the password, everything worked. Also, if you rely on "connect.inc.php" being left in the .../lwt/ directory, you should explicitly state that in the upgrade instructions. In the Read window, the top frame of the text window now goes across the middle of "TO DO" and "I KNOW ALL". I have to manually move it down a bit. That may be caused by the size of my laptop display 1366x768. I like the new methods of displaying multiple translations. I haven't tried anything else yet. Thanks. tommus on 19 July 2011 |

I have just released 0.9.2. In this version is a new settings screen, where you can change some properties of the "Read Text" and "Test" screen. This is important because different browsers and font sizes may result in an unpleasant viewing experience. None required that I noticed. Thanks for those new features. Very smooth. I have a suggestion. I find that the difference in colour between [3] and [4] is not very noticeable and a bit dreary. Because those two levels are probably the most important groups of vocabulary to learn, they probably should be more obvious and more attractive. I would suggest [3] be a nice bright yellow (brighter than the current level [4]), and that [4] be a bright light green, indicating it is almost to a [5] where it will be considered to be 'Learned'. You might make all colours configurable, but that is probably overkill and not necessary. Again, the more I use LWT, the more I like it. I especially like your excellent method of adding multiple word expressions to the dictionary, and making them obvious but not obtrusive in the text. That is very well done. So I very much encourage other HTLAL members to give LWT a try. It is very good and I think it is very effective. It is addictive too, which keeps me engaged with putting in new material and adding to the dictionary. And you keep track of everything, and all your languages, in one neat and easy package. If I install the last version in a new directory - will I be able to use it on my existing database ? I would like to participate in testing but keeping my existing version for now.
It would be interesting to know how people use the LWT. I did delete all languages but two - I keep the french for testing and create a Spanish for learning. I use it offline with local dictionaries (I have to copy and paste). When listening I prefer to use audacity or vlc. So far I did not use the "optionns for learning vocabulary". When hinting I put the words in category 1 or 2 - one is if the entry need to be edited and the other if the entry is ready. When I finished the hinting I sort my words on category and edit then move everything to the "ready" category. My texts are 150 to 400 words long. Michel1020 on 20 July 2011 |

Some Testings
Well I install the 9.2 in another directory and have access at my database - I am able to skip from one version to the other. There are some big problem with version 9.2 First I got a warning that a file was missing - I had to modify the name of file connect_easyphp.inc.php to connect.inc.php. This change get me in. So I tested the export. I went to my words Filter on French - the colomn language is on French but many Term/Romaniz are in Spanish. I marked all terms and exported to anki and I got some French (not all my french terms) but there is a big problem with the first one. I got the word une that I hinted in Spanish as a form ot the Spanish verb unir. I got une for the word - the translation is the one I included in my Spanish hint and the example sentence is a french sentence where the french word une (one) is used. I also noticed that the translations of my Spanish terms are shorted to the first line when I saw them with the French filter - they are completed when using the Spanish filter. My french texts look ok - I do not have any Spanish there - only the Mon premier don du sang - and 2 short texts I included myself for testing the "à" case. When exporting TSV it looks like I got all the displaied words Spanish and french including the une problem again. I have the same problem with the version 0.7 the only export there worked as the anki export in version 0.92. When watching the back-up file I saw it terminates with an insert. I am not sure but is there no instruction to close a created table when all insert are in ? I did not restore. I am sorry - I hope this will help. Editing : I did not import any dbinstall, dbupgrade.0.4 or .0.5 when I did import the database the first time in version 0.6 I only imported dbinstall. Editing 2 : Back to Spanish filter I got a list that look completed when exporting terms anki When exporting terms tsv I get the following message at the first line - <b>Notice</b>: Undefined variable: cnt in <b>C:\.....\utilities.inc.php</b> on line <b>788</b><br /> then after I get a list of 7 colomns where the fouth one is empty but I am not sure this empty colomn to be a problem.. If you install the ZIP in sub-directory "lwt", you start with URL: http://...../lwt If you install in sub-directory "abc", you start with URL: http://...../abc So you can have many versions. Every version can connect to the same or different databases. The database connection setup is always in connect.inc.php. The default DB is always "learning-with-texts". Just change the database name: $dbname = "............"; . . . . . Maybe you should start again from scratch with 0.9.3. There were so many changes and bug fixes in the meantime. Sorry for any inconvenience. No problem - I tested the 0.92 and wrote all my remarks in the hope to help the project. Here are some comments about the 0.93 The "zero word text" is now corrected - when you will have time I am very curious to know what was the problem there. Thank you for your job correcting that. And for all your job. I had to clean my database for the strange mixing between 2 languages - after the cleaning I add one word in Spanish and another in french - it looks ok. However I am not sure how and why this mixing problem occured the first time - so I am not sure if it will not occur again - I will keep testing for a few days - just in case. Thank you for your explanation about installing the software more than ones - each of them using its own database. 2 little problems. When creating a new text. I check before inserting. When clicking the back from the checking page it comes back to the text creation page but on an empty form in stead of coming back to the form containing the text - its title etc. The last text is the last text - this means if you change language you could be in Spanish and have the link to a french text if the last text you work on was a french one. The language of the last text is well displaied but i think it would be better to link to the last french text when you are working on french or to the Spanish when working on Spanish etc I did not test a lot and there are many options I did not use like the listening part - and the vocabulary exercises. Today 0.9.4 was released. "Import of terms" now only needs a translation if the status is set to 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. Furthermore it will not only imports terms as TAB (ASCII 9) separated values (TSV) or "#" separated values, but also as comma separated values (CSV, strings in quotes ("...", if needed), a quote within a string as double quotes (""); this is the format that LingQ uses for exporting terms). New settings "Testing: Number of sentences displayed from text, if available" and "Terms: Number of sentences generated from text, if available". Default is "Just ONE". I've been using the programme for a few hours now and would like to make one little
suggestion though I may have overlooked something. When testing you are essentially forced to see the sentence that the term was taken from and it might be useful to be able to be able see the term out of context so that the context does not act as a possible crutch. It isn't really a big problem since if you see the term across different contexts you will learn it but it might be useful to occasionally be able to test some terms without a contextual sentence to guide you. jazzboy.bebop on 23 July 2011 |

I've tried using this program which looks great with korean characters but haven't as yet been able to figure out how to set it up to do that. In reading the section on setting up new languages it would appear my problem is the RegExp Word Characters section that determines that it's a certain language characters. I've tried a number of different regular expressions and have been searching to find out how to setup a expression to do that but so far haven't had any luck.
Has anybody else been able to get this program to recognize korean characters yet? Really like the look of lwt and want to try it out in my language of study. Thanks! chicagoseoul on 24 July 2011 |

Another useful dictionary many korean language learners use is from the korean web search giant naver dot com. The URL that can be entered for that is - 'http://endic.naver.com/search.nhn?isOnlyViewEE=N&query= ' I put in this one and the google translate one. I like your new improvements. They look very good. However, on my Win 7/64bit/Firefox system, the text read screen is not working correctly. When I click on a word, normally the Word small frame opens up near the word. But it now pops up at the very top of the text and pushes the text down. In other words, it places the Word frame at the very top and above all the text. So if the top of the text is scrolled off the top of the Read window, you don't even see the Word frame without scrolling to the top of the text. So it is not usable like that. So far in previous versions I got the word window always displayed below the word and so I did not see it when clicking on a word displayed on the last line of the screen but it is quite easy to roll the text and click on the words when they are on the first lines of the screen.
However (to help tommus) it would be better to display the word window so that it can be seen whereever is the word we click. I did not test 096 yet. I have few time for now. I keep some time to test the last version before 1.0 if necessary - of course it is not easy to know which one will be the last one before 1.0 Michel1020 on 27 July 2011 |

I just installed everything on a WinXP/XAMPP/Firefox5 machine. Everything works like it should. Can somebody confirm the problem that Tommus described "... For me on XP this display did not change - it displays below the word . even when the word is on the bottom line of the screen.

Yes. Exactly according to the upgrade instructions. When the Word frame didn't work properly, I closed everything and rebooted the computer, and restarted everything. The problem with the Word window was exactly the same. It was 100% consistently at the very top of the text, and it pushed the text down to make a space for itself at the top. Now the good news: I turned the computer off for the night. This morning, it is working perfectly. I didn't change anything. It works perfectly. No sign of the Word window going to the top. Very weird. I hope it continues to work properly. Sorry for the possible false alarm, but something caused it to work differently initially. I'll obviously let you know if the Word frame problem reoccurs. I continue to be impressed with how good LWT is. I use it several times a day. I have a lot of text and 145,000 L2 > L1 translation word pairs. It has become a major part of my daily language learning. Thanks so much. tommus on 27 July 2011 |

(Active) texts They have been parsed and tokenized according to the rules defined for the language. The result ist stored in a cache of sentences and text items. They use a lot of space in the database. Reading with term creation/editing and dictionary lookup is possible. Testing of a stored term that occurs in the text, is possible. A terms will be tested within the context of any sentence(s) in all active texts (the number of sentences may be set (1, 2, or 3) as a preference). Archived texts They are not parsed and tokenized, only the text is stored. Compared with active texts, they don't use much space in the database, because no sentences and no text items are stored. Reading with term creation/editing and dictionary lookup is not possible. Testing of a stored term, that occurs in the text, is possible, but a term will be tested ONLY within the context of the sentence(s) that has/have been stored with the term in the sentence field, if the term does not occur in any active text. Re-Parsing is only necessary if you change something in the language settings "RegExp Split Sentences", etc. Set term sentences If you import terms and you don't have sentences with the term in curly brackets (they are marked red - if not - in the terms listing), then you can create them automatically from texts, to allow testing within sentence context. I have been using this version for a couple of hours and everything is working well. I guess to put more emphasis on language learning and less on software development, we can comment on how we are using LWT, what techniques might work best, etc. and generally exchange ideas. I tend to concentrate on reading and spending time thoroughly understanding new or poorly known words, and improving the dictionary. For each reading article, I work on it until I have no more words as unknown (1), or in learning (2). I assign 3 to those newly learned or poorly known words, 4 to those words I know passively but not actively, 5 for those words I seem to know both passively and actively and am comfortable with, and 99 for the ones I know as well as my native language. I assign most proper nouns like peoples' names, places, etc. to Ignore unless they have a unique spelling in my target language. I am not a person who likes testing very much so I do that part only occasionally and for a diversion. I follow the statistics regularly to see how I am doing. So far I have not gone back over texts very much to try to move words higher up in understanding, but I will do that on a semi-regular schedule. I use the Google sentence translation a lot. With the colours and the dictionaries, etc., I find I can understand and analyse each word and each sentence much better than I can with other reading or studying techniques. I don't think it is necessarily that difficult to install, just takes a while. The
instructions are perfectly clear and sufficient though they might seem a little overwhelming to some who are used to the usual installshield wizard. It's still easier than what you had to do when installing some programs in DOS back in the day! jazzboy.bebop on 29 July 2011 |

I know what you mean, but thankfully the instructions are nice and clear and I got it all working without any problems. Well, apart from when you need to rename a file and I renamed it exactly as it said with .php at the end and then the thing didn't work. Took out the .php and then it worked fine so watch out for that. In the end I think the lengthy installation is worth it, it is a great piece of software. jazzboy.bebop on 29 July 2011 |

Version 0.9.8 has been released.
This version has an alternative text display mode (see new checkbox on the "Read text" screen). [Show All] = ON (the only mode in previous releases): ALL terms are shown, and all multi-word terms are shown as superscripts before the first word. The superscript indicates the number of words in the multi-word term. [Show All] = OFF (new): Multi-word terms now hide single words and shorter or overlapping multi-word terms. This makes it easier to concentrate on multi-word terms while displaying them without superscripts, but creation and deletion of multi-word terms can be a bit slow in long texts. Enjoy. PS: This version will be, if there are no new bugs, release 1.0 (released in a few days from now). After 1.0, there will be no new releases for some time. Where do you want any bug report ?
I did send a mp on this site last friday but I am not sure if you read it or did not. Bug report are not exactly question - so the help forum is not the best choice. I hate the style of the user request site where last post come each time at the top and you have to read each entry up to down but have to go up to read each next entry. About the new option I prefer a lot to see the numbers representing multi words terms in the text - so I can also see individual words. I do not see the advantage of the new option - only hiding this numbers ? 2 things in my mp were the size of the table should be put to 100 % in the css file in order to fit all screen size. I also suggested a save frame size option on the read text page because it is a lot easy to make the best frame size from this page than from the settings and preference one - I think. There was other things but I am suspecting they are more difficult to implement . I am sure we all understand the delay for post 1.0 version (if any are needed)- for sure you have a life outside of LWT and you want to use your baby to learn languages. Michel1020 on 31 July 2011 |

I just found this thread after someone posted about this software on the fi3m forum.
I can confirm that the install instructions are absolutely completely and totally overwhelming for a normal person. I have no idea what an apache server or a php client is and it all sounds far too complicated, all other programmes I can just download and use, my aim is to learn languages not software programming! I don't even really understand if this is an online thing or a programme that you can download and use offline (which sounds much more useful)? I don't doubt it sounds fantastic, but I would doubt my ability to use it if I can't even understand what it is. And I'm an intelligent human being - just computers are not my thing, other than using them in a normal manner. After much trepidation and hesitation because the install looked intimidating, I went ahead and tried it. It installed perfectly and worked first time. Nice job!
Now for my first time user question. How do I set it up for Spanish. I read through previous posts in this thread and other people talked about using it with Spanish, but I don't see how to do that. I do not put anything as dictionaries or translator url. What I do is open lwt in one tab and other sites like dictionaries - google translate etc in other tabs of my browser. Most of the time I will use LWT offline with a local dictionaries on my computer. If you prefer to put the dictionaries url in lwt - I suggest you copy the french link and change fr to es or something similar - I do not see those url right now. There has been a lot of concern recently about Google shutting down the Google Translate API. I don't really understand the details but it may not mean shutting down the Google Translate webpage, but may affect access to it via other web pages and maybe programs like LWT. They even mention a pay version. Loss of access to GT would certainly make the LWT environment less productive. If you open a dictionary or a translator in LWT - you have to copy and paste the result to the LWT entry - therefore opening the dictionary in LWT or in another tab of your browser make few or no difference. Michel1020 on 05 August 2011 |
I know this. Therefore I don't use the API as e.g. LingQ does. I just _call_ the Google Translate Website like a user does it manually. If URI changes, you can change it on the Language screen. Copy from a dictionary and Paste into LWT cannot be automated. You have to think yourself what to copy, and it's part of the learning process. The dictionary frame opens in LWT automatically, no need to type the term again, and you see the result not in second tab. lwtproject on 05 August 2011 |

I prefer to use dictionary in new tab or out of browser with local dictionary - because I have a small 10 inches screen.
This freedom in the way to use LWT is very pleasant. One big advantage compare to lingq is that you are not forced to get all the updates. If you are happy with your version you do not have to update. On the other side when lingq makes an update you have to take it either you like it or not. With LWT, it is even possible to test an update - install it in a new dir - test it - if you like it then use it else go back using your previous working version. Michel1020 on 07 August 2011 |
One thing that makes this process very simple is to use the AutoCopy add-on in Firefox (may be something similar in other browsers). Just highlight the translated term or words in the Google Translate window. They are automatically copied to the system clipboard. Right click in the LWT term translation window and paste. Yes. I agree. But in language learning, I seem to do it hundreds of times per day. I really find the convenience of AutoCopy very worthwhile for lots of things, but especially language learning. As I use the program more I'm finding that I enjoy typing my own definitions since that seems to set them more firmly in mind. As much as possible I try to use my target language (Spanish) to write my definitions, and avoid English as much as possible. Once I've thought through how to write a definition in Spanish I rarely ever have to look up a word a second time.
I'm also finding that having a variety of texts from a variety of authors is a good idea. Instead of pounding away on the same piece of text I like to inject variety in my reading, so I bounce from 'Johnathan Livingston Seagull" to "The Pit and the Pendulum", to "Sun Tzu Art of War", and the "Jumping Frog of Calavaras County", etc. etc. I like to keep my reading fresh and interesting. I finally got around to installing the program. I think that I did everything correctly,
and I arrived at the page where you select your target language. To my surprise, Spanish was not one of the languages listed. There was only German, French, Japanese, and Chinese. Code cleanup and optimization, better code documentation. Checking maximum text length in text input/edit/check screens. Media directory is not included anymore, user has to create it if needed. It could be because you visit http://127.0.0.1:8888/lwt before easyphp is ready - it could take a few minutes to be ready or it could be your browser is set to work offline - even you are not working on the internet your browser should be set online or it is possible you have to reload the page or it could be your firewall - it should give access to easyphp, to apache and to your browser Michel1020 on 14 August 2011 |

definitely be a major part of my language studies. It streamlines my reading process considerably. I'd encourage other HTLAL members to give it a shot, even if you're intimidated about setup process. It seems to have all the important features of LingQ with the following major exceptions: --No absurd alien avatars --No "words known" vanity tags --No cartoon versions of Steve Kaufmann --No additional web fora to distract from actual learning The last is very important, since I find fora very distracting. I am not sure but - in the upgrade instructions you say to backup our database but do not talk about restoring it and if I understand the word table changes so restoring the old database will not update the words table ?

Backing up is always a good idea, if something went wrong. The upgrade to the new database is automatic. The system recognizes old databases and upgrades them. No action needed. Uservoice does not accept my entry so I put it here some ideas.
1 Translate documentation and interface. This could be very helpfull for people who don't understand English and to promote LWT on no English websites and maybe media. I could help with french. Your name J. Pierre sounds french but Elizabeth Montgomery husband had that same name in the famous tv serie of the 60th, and he was an American. 2 Add a prefixe to the table names in your code. If one watchs your code now it will see the words : words, sentences, languages, texts as parts of texts, tables names and variables names (maybe this last one is linked to the tables names). If the tables names start with tab or JP or any short prefixe they will be a lot more easy to identify as tabwords, tabtexts or JPsentences, JPlanguages etc. 3 I know some people ask to make it an integrated software together with an apache-mysql-php plateform. The online versions exist for them. I would ask the opposite. Would it be possible to divide LWT into a few modules that people could take or not. Reading - Listening - Testing - Backup - Import - Export - keyboard shortcuts etc. I think this way your code will be more easy to understand and people could make corrections or create their own idea or make their own modules. Also I think this application start to turn a little complicated and I am sure no users will use all its possibilities. 4 This one will interest the online version and the people who want to "kill" lingq. Add some kind of share vocabulary in the way of a second database where people could put their words translation and romanisation and could read those from other users. 5 Make it 3D - everything is 3D. I have no interest to run and administer a multi user platform. Re 3) No. Not possible. Re 4) No, too much work for me (who wants to administer such a db??) I have nothing against LingQ. In fact, it's great. My intention with LWT was to offer a free solution for people who cannot afford LingQ, and to offer a faster solution with more control over everything, especially the data. LingQ has some features that LWT will never have (community/forum, usage of saved terms of other learners -although often wrong-, library of learning material, writing correction, speaking with a tutor. It's a good solution for people who want it EASY and COMPLETE. LWT doesn't help you to write or to speak. Re 5) Again no. J. Pierre, you are going to go down in the annals of language learning as one of the great innovators. LWT is quite inspired, in many ways. I think it is well on its way to becoming one of the pillars of the self-study language learning community, along with Anki, L-R, Iversen's method, and other techniques and technologies that stand out above the rest. LWT certainly has given my language learning efforts the stimulus they needed to reach for the next level. Thank you for the countless hours of work you have undoubtedly put into LWT.

Don't be sorry.
I did not expect you to say yes to all. Point 2 the prefixe on tables names would make your code more easy to read - this would make it more open source and more easy for people to create options they want. I would try to do this myself but new versions come out so often. Any idea how many yet to come ? For point 4 you would not have to manage the database - only create this option. Database management would be done by people who create a LWT multi users website. This is not very important - like you say on lingq the hints of the community are often wrong and so they could be in a LWT sharing system. It is possible to share vocabulary in a LWT community through export and import. For point 1 - people must only translate to their native language. I understand that having create this competitor to lingq you do not want to look like weakening them more. I deeply disagree about the qualities you see in them. 1 Communities and forums around languages learning exist elsewhere - see this one here at how to learn any languages. 2 I already talk about the sharing of hints in my previous post. 3 The lingq library for me is divided in 3 parts. The first one contains quality material that is available on other sites. I think it is very unfair from lingq to put this material on lingq site. It would be a lot more fair to link to the providers sites. Even if they get authorisation from these providers. The second part is bad material create by lingq members or staff. For the staff thing - I think about the who is she ? serie That is translated in all their languages and often do not sound natural for what I understand. For the bad material shared by members it is a lot worst - there are a lot of mistakes - either people create material that is not in their native language or their should start learning their native before learning foreign languages. There are often corrections in the forum but nobody learning a lingq lesson should have to read the forum to be sure he or she is not learning mistakes. The third part is for people creating good material - since they work for free I had to put a word for them. The problem is that with bad material how do you know when you are learning a language what is a good material and what is not ? 4 You don't need a tutor to speak in your target language. Make some foreign friends. If you work in finance take a foreign dog (that is because in Wall street they say if you want a friend take a dog). As I never pay lingq I never had any writing corrected there. I am sure there are many mistakes in corrections too. I do correct french writings from students now and then it is not an easy task. This service of corrections exist on other site for free. The best way is to correct yourselve - if you have an audio and a transcript - listen to the audio write what you hear and then correct with the transcript. I disagree with you that LWT do not teach to speak or to write. In my opinion the best way to learn to speak is to learn to understand by listening (well I do not listen through LWT but one principle of LWT is to listen to the texts we work on). The best way to learn to write is to read - that is what we do in LWT - reading. I could say a lot about the unfair business model of lingq. I don't share your opinion. I think that LingQ is a good system. It is simple to use and it works and brings good results. I used it one/two years ago for quite a while, and I've learned a lot. I had some ideas to improve the system, but they were not implemented. So I started with LWT - for my personal learning. Many (young) people don't have an income, and many people come from countries where 10 US$ per month are much money. They cannot afford LingQ. IMHO now that LWT exist - lingq should stop to exist or become entirely free. There is nothing offered by lingq that is not offered elsewhere for free. And if some services are better in a commercial relations - they do not need a third party like lingq.
The only reason for lingq to still exist is because people know them but do not know LWT - because they have a marketing plan. Other reasons could be some people are in love with Steve Kaufmann and others think he is god. The only good reason is they do not read English. ---------- Thank you for the links about git. Yeah, that's a kind of drawback. While it looks promising (LingQ functionality but for free, better flashcard options etc.) I haven't yet installed the beast for that very reason. Even though I'm mostly at my own computer, I want the possibility to skim through a text wherever I am.

I think we're being a bit harsh on LingQ. There are many reasons for LingQ to exist, and I am glad it does even if I am not personally ready to become a paying member. The community that has sprung up around the service is probably motivating for many learners. Some may even enjoy the avatar/wordcount badges. To me these are distractions, but I'm sure some people take motivation from them and I think anything that helps people learn is good. Another great thing is that LingQ has done the work of collecting materials suitable for learning, even around the A1 level, in many languages. Many people will pay for that convenience even if the podcasts and public domain books are available elsewhere for free. For instance, if I had to go out and find beginner level reading exercises with audio in Russian or Czech I wouldn't know where to begin looking. LingQ has done that for me. Convenience goes beyond finding materials. Logging into an existing website is easy. Figuring out how to run a local php server or set up your own personal website is not easy for most people. I'm a big fan of LWT, but I know that complicated installation is going to be a dealbreaker for a lot of people. If this could be rebuilt as a desktop application like AnkiSRS, with a central server to coordinate (free) desktop and (paid) mobile app activities, then I think the uptake in the language learning community would be much greater. oldearth on 20 August 2011 |
Sorry, but why the LWT installation is considered so difficult?? I don't get it. (1) Download EasyPHP installer package. (2) Install EasyPHP. (3) Download LWT zip archive. (4) Create LWT directory within EasyPHP "www" directory. (5) Unpack LWT in this directory. (6) Rename the correct connect file. (7) Start EasyPHP. (8) In your browser, go to http://127.0.0.1/lwt (9) Install the demo database, or just start and set up the language you want to learn. I do these easy steps in 3 minutes. Maybe setting up a language is difficult, but the LWT installation isn't. If some people are unable to create a directory, or to unzip a zip archive or to rename a file, they should first learn how to use a personal computer - before starting to learn a foreign language ;-) lwtproject on 20 August 2011 |

I didn't take you up on your offer, therefore my opinion is irrelevant? Wow, thanks for being so respectful of other opinions on HTLAL. First of all, I'm a woman. Second, I personally had no problems with the setup, but I am not a typical user. I have done extensive coding (but not in php) and have worked in computer tech support in the past. I have my own site going now so I don't need your help Michel1020; the only thing I didn't already know about was configuring the .htaccess file to keep it private, but I figured it out fairly easily by reading the documentation. Third, it is not arrogant of me (as you imply with your sarcastic quotes) to make a distinction between my own knowledge of computers and that of 'most people' because there is a large gap. The steps are easy if you are a person who already knows how to follow instructions. But conceptually, all this stuff is hard for regular people. Many people don't understand there is a distinction between something running locally and something running on a remote server through a web browser. When I worked as a tech support person in college you wouldn't believe some of the things we got called for. (E.g. 'Come fix my computer... Facebook isn't displaying my wall correctly.') An example: A friend recently asked me to explain what linux is. I started by making an analogy to Windows XP or Mac OSX, with the main difference that linux is free and open source. Their response: Oh, so linux is like Facebook! I was shocked. And this was a student at Harvard -- not a dumb person by any means, just not very knowledgeable about computers. Not everyone needs to be a computer scientist.

If you are too stubborn to recognize that a 9-step installation is a barrier for people with little understanding of computers, then you are way out of touch. It isn't my software anymore because I released it into the public domain. Everybody is invited to improve it because my knowledge has its limits. Typical installations on Linux (and even on Windows or on a Mac) need much more than "(1) download file, (2) double click". The installation of Apache, PHP and mySQL is normally a complicated one. It has been already extremely simplified in easyPHP. Maybe LWT is not made for people with little understanding of computers. Tagging of terms introduced. Tags are little pieces of information (20 characters max., no spaces, no commas, case sensitive!) attached to terms to help you catagorize and organize your terms. You can import (CSV, TSV) and export (Anki, TSV) terms together with tag information. Two new tables save tag information, and they are created automatically during first usage after update. Display of example sentences is now delayed. Backup creates the database SQL file now as a gzipped file. Restore can process old unzipped or new gzipped files. Sorry I did not install 1.2.0 yet and I had no plan to install 1.2.1 because the new audio options have no advantage compared with what I get from audacity and vlc.

Bugs in previous version of an application might have been fixed in later versions, so if you find a bug, you might as well update to see if that solves your problem ^_^. I just started playing with this, but I thought I would pass along a little tip.
For those of you on iPads (or iPhones), you probably know you can add an icon to your homescreen that will take you directly to a website. If you put the icon for LWT in the root of you install and name it "apple-touch-icon.png" then when you add the icon to your homescreen,, that icon would get used. I simply grabbed the LWT icon from the sourceforge site and here is how it appears for me: 
Now, I can click on it and go straight into the LWT site. @lwtproject Perhaps you may consider adding this to the source base BTW, I installed this on one of my personal hosted sites and it was pretty simple to get it working. Just as simple as Wordpress. I tried installing it with both methods but I can't get it to open.
If I click on the link in step 10 from the sourceforge site then I get a blank white screen. If I type in: http://127.0.0.1:8888/lwt like it shows in the video tutorial hen I get an unable to connect to server at 127... message. Quick question about lwt on the ipad/iphone. When i listen to audio and try to follow the text while scrolling
down, the player on top leaves the screen, so i can no longer go back 3,4 or 5 seconds. Is there a way to leave the player at the top of the screen and only scroll the text? rjtrudel on 29 August 2011 |
I would love to see this fixed or some solution found. I started using LWT this weekend and I like it a LOT, but I hate being tied to my computer to study. Like you, I'm trying to use it on my iPad, but it's hard and annoying having to use it the way it works today. It seems that the problem is the LWT web UI uses frames and Safari doesn't handle it well. I tried a couple other iPad web browsers, even paying $4 for one, but none of them work either. Yes I did, but as you pointed out, you still need to do a bunch of scrolling. Also, I don't like the dictionary lookup being in a popup, which translates to a new tab as I then have to keep switching tabs. It's interesting, but I found several references that say you can scroll within a frame using 2 fingers but that doesn't seem to work. Perhaps that only works depending on how the frames are created/configured. I realize that the reason it doesn't work is due to issues with Safari on the iPad and how they handle frames. About ipad and iphone
I am not sure how it works with ipad and Iphone. Maybe Safari would work well with frames that are managed by the css - but this would demand a lot of work to implement. You could have the text parts in your iphone or ipad and listen to the audio from your ipod. Or you could use your tv as a screen for your computer and use a wireless mouse-keyboard to use LWT on your tv from your sofa. Michel1020 on 29 August 2011 |
Success!!! I hesitated in even trying this program because I thought that the installation process would be too tough for my limited computer skills. I saw the easy php icon in the corner and when I hover over it it says "started" so I thought it was ok. I then opened up firefox and tried the various links but none of them worked. Right clicking then selecting "local web" opens it immediately. Now let's see if I can figure out all the settings for Thai. Thanks for the help. *EDIT* I can import a text but the only highlighted words are English proper nouns and loan words. I guess I have to change some settings before it recognizes Thai and I haven't been able to get the dictionary to load either. I use 2 different ones but for both of them the url doesn't change to the format mentioned in the help section after searching for a term. I'm going to keep trying but I'm starting to think this might all be a bit too complicated for me. The Globefish add-on for firefox that someone mentioned works great. I can read text in my browser, use that as the dictionary (along with my others), and open an mp3 player and anki and get something similar to LWT but without the display of known/unknown words and stats. Ok I get something. As I know nothing about thai I am about sure this is far from perfect.
Both your dictionaries don't put the searched word in the url - it is not possible to integrate them in lwt but you could open them in other tabs when lwt is runing. I get a thai English dictionary that put searched word in the url. However the words splitsing is causing troubles. I only manage to get one translation from this dictionary because it is the first word and it is followed by a coma mark (the word for king). I think it will be difficult if not impossible to learn thai with lwt because for what I understand many if not all thai words are not split from each other. You could work out your thai texts in the "bulk lookup" the 3rd box of http://www.thai-language.com/dict On the next page you change detailled into simple press go. On the result page under ">> Processing the first 2500 characters of your input. Applied 100 of 192 compounds found amongst 457 words." First I do not rant in several forums - I had only posted this remark in the help forum of LWT - where you delete it. So now this remark exists only here. About the version of LWT that I put online in http://trabulo.net16.net I created this site for people who like simplicity and think too complicated to install a amp server and lwt on their computer. I am sure many of those people prefer the early version of LWT because there are less options and it makes the early version more easy. That said the version of LWT I use have nothing to do with my remark. I think it is important people who get the first version of 1.2.2 know there is a new version with the same version number.
For your information I use a version 1.2.2 on my computer and there is no thai language in this version - since we are now able to create the database without the demo database. I would have saved some time if you had put the configuration for thai in your site. Very interesting.
One way to avoid the problems of Safari with the frames is to make the frames from the css. Everything displayed on the screen should be between <p> and </p> forming a paragraph. Each paragraph could be named and this way distinguished from other paragraphs. Then in the css it is possible to create the frameset effect with data like the starting point of the paragraph on the screen, the number of lines, the lenght of lines and so on, for each paragraph. Hey all! I really really liked the idea of this LWT project, and how much it can help people learn a language, so I wanted to help spread it myself.
While the steps to install it are indeed very easy, we can't doubt that they are intimidating for those unfamiliar with those interfaces, so I am hosting the system on my website as an alternative for those interested. As well as skipping the set-up procedure, by it being available online you can access it from anywhere, and I'll worry about updating it myself so individual users don't have to. The set-up procedure is very very easy: 1. Michel, as I said in reply to you on my forum, there are no real problems - there are final debugging of things we missed, before I announce the completed version on my blog.
Your site doesn't necessarily solve these problems, and it uses older versions of the software and you aren't clear about if it has the same issues I'm having or others. As this is open source it's great that people have choices of how to use it, but please promote the advantages of using your system rather than vaguely saying mine has problems that yours solves, as it doesn't. And you don't host 1.4.3, you just link to it! The only "problem" we can find on my current version is exporting vocabulary for study, but it looks very easy to solve, and will likely be solved very quickly. irishpolyglot on 21 September 2011 |

My site is ready - the registration is not automatized and will not be but this leads to a delay for the first use only - no more than 48 hours I hope - probably a lot less.
I don't add any social feature - users could share data with export and import option - I could create shared accounts to help with sharing. So far I do not host or link to 1.4.3 I host 1.4.0 that I use myself and 1.0.0 and 1.3.0 as demos - I will install 1.4.3 for new users unless user demands another version. I agree with you a lot - but bugs are not very important it is possible to learn with all versions. Once I am happy with the version I use I will probably not update it unless something new comes in new version and I want this new feature.
I think language learners prefer learning languages than using the last version. People could start testing the 1.0.0 where there is less options - then testing 1.3.0 then get the last version. This way they are able to test options step by step and admire your work. I am in a specific situation where the online version is more quick than my offline one because my computer get slow because the lack of free disk space. Michel1020 on 22 September 2011 |

I'm sorry, but I am unable to support the older versions you've installed. I am also unable to support Benny's special version. I first wanted to thank you for this program, it is wonderful. I was also wondering if anyone had come up with a good way to produce lists of common words that would make for nice "pre-loaded" dictionaries. While I find looking up words can be a good aid to learning them if they are brand new, it can also be a touch tedious, especially if one's internet is not working, and having a preloaded dictionary might speed things up. I have considered that it might be possible to construct a program to do it, but I haven't really hashed that through in my mind yet. Indeed. It is down since friday. I hope it will be back soon. The host is down too. This happens with free host - more so with those offering unlimited databases number - disk space and transfer. This is the second time my site and host are down since I registred. In therory this unlimited number of databases allow unlimited number of user but in reality few people are interested in lwt online so - using a host offering less could be enough and more stable. If you do not get enough from your host for your number of user you could consider opening a second account with your host or with another host. What is the difference between "Chinese" and "Chinese2" in the language option list? It is not immediately clear which one should be selected from simply looking at the list. As far as I can tell, "Chinese" splits the words into individual characters, which I think is fairly useless, and the "Chinese2" appears to group words into phrases, which is also not that helpful. dongsen on 26 September 2011 |

It is a little frustrating to see the texts so small on 1 left third of the page when 2 other thirds are empty. To put it simply, splitting up the chinese characters is about as useful as splitting up English characters. the most common words have one character, but the majority of words have more than one character. For the majority of words, when you put two characters together, the meaning and pronunciation of one or more of the character can be different than if the word was written by itself. I feel like Japanese doesn't work very well with LWT, because it doesn't seem like it wants to cooperate with the Hiragana. I can't name a new term in hiragana, because it says something about lower-case and upper-case.

Hi, the error message is a bit misleading in case of Asiatic etc. languages. It seems that you CHANGED the TERM while EDITING it. This is not allowed. The only changes that are allowed are to change characters within the term from uppercase to lowercase and vice versa. For Asiatic languages it does not make sense to change a term. You have the following possibilities: (1) delete the term (popup menu) and (2) create a new term (yellow icon in the top left frame) Normally it is not needed to change a term (besides uppercase/lowercase). I fully agree. Segmentation is possible via a lot of webtools or via the Hanzi Split function within the Wenlin software. If you don't want to segment, use the 1-character=1-word option and load a dictionary e.g. CCDICT or similar into LWT. Then this dictionary will do the segmentation automatically for you. That is also the preferred approach for Japanese, etc. Please do not forget: LWT is not a tool for Chinese or Japanese, the aim is to support nearly all writable languages of the world. lwtproject on 30 September 2011 |

So I've been playing around with this since yesterday and am really excited about it, but I've got a question (or perhaps a request for suggestions) on how to use it for languages such as English ("give something up" - give up) or German ("Ruf mich an" - anrufen), where you have phrasal or perhaps compound verbs which don't immediately follow one another in a sentence?

I see 5 ways to run around the "split word"
- if both parts are not more than 8 words away from each other you can take them together in an up to 9 words sentence. - use tag - save both part as 2 separated words but tag them with a common reference for example give with tag give_up and up with same tag give_up. There are for sure other and better ways to use tags. I am a little short to figure them out, right now. - export your vocabulary and edit your saved item. - explane the case in the translation or in the romanisation field. Here are some thoughts and suggestions I have after having used it for a few days. I think it would be great to be able to create ONE main word, then link other words to that main word. The tags section can then be used to talk about the function of the word:
Word - Main group - tags am - be - 1st person (or simply: I), present was - be - singular (I, s/he), past jumped - jump - past trucks - truck - plural him - he - d.o., i.o. (nonsubject) etc. When coming across a word, you look to the definition of the main word. Also, when creating the main word, it would be nice to be able to add other conjugated/declined forms. That way, I could just visit verbix and copy/paste all forms of a verb. Another idea goes back to seperable particles (compound verbs). This would be entirely up to the user, meaning the program wouldn't parse the texts looking for compound verbs. Basically, after having selected the main (verb) component, you could then click on the secondary (attached) component, and the program would then recognize that the two form a set (and could then search to see if it exists/its "main group"). I realize this is considerably more complicated, but I'd love to see a way to handle seperated verbs (or reflexive verbs). You could also have a list of "particles" for verbs, so clicking on the English verb "put" along with the definition in your native language you would get (or could click on something to get) a list of other "phrasal verbs" that you've already come across: put up, put out, put down, etc. This is a wonderful tool and I've been having a lot of fun with it the last few days. You could get a so called main word with the tags. For example put the tag be to all forms of to be - add the tag main to the word to be. Then you are able to make a list of all to be forms and to find the main form easily.
It is possible to add items that are not in your text one by one or you could create a text with all the forms of a verb or of many verbs.
You are not able to see all the forms of a word when reading a text (unless the text include all those forms) but you can go to the My Terms page and sort on 2 tags. I do not use the testing options of LWT but they look quite poor to me. No way to test on a specific tag and no way to repeat a test or to use the other testing exercises when you finished the vocabulary of a text for the day. Michel1020 on 13 October 2011 |
What exactly is the difficulty with chinese in LWT ? It will help you to segmentate your texts but this is not specific to chinese and don't demand a lot of time compare to the total language learning time. I am suspecting maybe you try to work with texts too difficult for your skill or you expect fluency to come to you too quick. I do not see why learning chinese would not work in LWT. What a fabulous tool with is. It will take a while to get through to the stage where only new words come up blue in any text, but i can see that approaching.
The problem I ma having is exporting to ANKI. I managed to download the file using the safaro browser, but ANKI doesn't recognise the file when I try and open it as a file. Is there anything I can do? stmc2 on 13 October 2011 |

In the LWT distribution is a sub directory "anki". Here you'll find a file "LWT.anki.zip". Unzip this file. Open THIS Anki deck "LWT.anki". Remove all cards in the ANKI browser (Icon: Magnifying glass -> select all -> delete). Close the ANKI browser. Now you ready to IMPORT Anki files exported from LWT into this deck. After importing you are able to learn. If you export more terms from LWT either IMPORT or UPDATE within ANKI (depending the cards exist already (UPDATE) or not (IMPORT)). It's impossible to help you without more details.

I have only marked the terms that have green dots. After downloading these, I have exported accross to ANKI. When I try to review cards, this comes up on the screen

Dont worry, problem solved. i updated my version of ANKI and the version has a simple 'Card Layout' option when you go to the magnifying glass. I changed allignment from centre to left and now it works.

Yes. However, using Mecab produces output in I think ANSI, which messes up the text. I have no clue how to utilize this for Japanese, except for putting soace in manually - which is the horror for longer texts. Can't be helped, it seems. It is a very nice tool indeed and I'm going to use it while reading new texts.
However, one feature that it lacks for me at the moment (or I just haven't discovered how to cope with this yet) is linking several words together - that is, different verb, noun, etc. forms to their origin. For example: different forms of German adjective with endings: -e -er -er -en could be linked to their base form and they all would be updated simultaneously, rather than each one as another word. nutem on 13 March 2012 |

I've tried it on a 7" Android tablet. It works, but it's not a pleasant experience. There's just not enough screen real estate. Also, I have problems with the dictionary frame showing up on first showing. I have to reload the page for it to show up. I used the standard browser that ships with Android. I just use LWT since a few weeks and I have to say i'm very happy to discover this program and i'm surpised
and impressed by it's effectiveness. I used to read texts with the iBooks app (on the iPad), to look up the words I don't know in different dictionary's. When I found the correct translation, I marked the word(s) in the text to make a note with the translation. This was not a bad way to learn vocabulary for me, but it was very slow and it was much work to make flashcards for every word in Anki. Now that I use LWT, it's so much more easier to look up the translations and to put everything in Anki. It was not easy to install the program, altough not impossible for someone who doesn't know very much of computers (like me) if you follow the instructions step by step. Any any case, it is definitely worth the effort to try it. The program could be improved on several aspects, like a solution for all the scrolling for example, an easier way to install the program or a possibility to add a fourth dictionary, but i'm very satisfied with LWT and I would recommend this program to everyone who learns a foreign language.
I read the texts mostly on my iPad and it works well, but only with short texts. I usually copy a news article or a Wikipedia article. The scrolling gets very annoying in the case with longer texts. Aquila on 16 April 2012 |

Importing text frequently? Still manually highlighting and copy & paste into LWT?
Well, I've found that Clearly (plugin made by Evernote) helps. It's strips away the crud on a page to view only the article. So, you can just Ctrl-A to copy the article. Helps just a little. A LWT-specific plugin would be better, obviously. Anyone made one? erikspen on 28 May 2012 |

As a matter of facts I do not use it neither offline nor online but there is many ways to use it offline.
To have an offline dictionary is one way. Maybe it is possible to use this dictionary as the lwt software uses the online dictionaries but if it is not possible - you have to copy and paste manually - not a big issue I think - the big part of the dictionary work in lwt is reading the definition or translation and understanding the text you are working on. One other way is to export all your words or some of them - translate them - import your list of words with the translation into lwt. Another way would be to use parallele texts - I think it is possible to open 2 lwt in 2 tabs working in one language each - if so it is easy to copy and paste from one to the other. Subtitles files are a great source for parallele texts I think. Editing : You could also get a frequency list - translate it and import the list with the translation. Or Work offline - copy and paste every words that you don't understand. Then close lwt and search the internet to understand these words. Then importing the list with all the translation and definition you got from the net into lwt when you are offline again. Michel1020 on 29 June 2012 |

There were quite a lot of complaints in this thread about the difficult installation of LWT.
Some weeks ago, I found an LWT alternative, programmed in Java, that looks very promising: "Foreign Language Text Reader" (FLTR). So if you find LWT too complicated to install, or you find a local webserver/database too complicated to manage you may try the more lightweight http://code.google.com/p/fltr/ - FLTR . I'm too dumb to configure FLTR for Japanese.
The tool shows the stuff without line break and seems to not even recognize the words as words (the "letters" as "letters"). In a mixed text with roman letters, those are being accepted though. Neither LWT, nor FLTR have been of use for me. Too bad. atama warui on 20 August 2012 |

Both LWT and FLTR have example data with a Japanese example.
For Japanese the FLTR language settings must be adjusted as follows: WordCharRegExp = 一-龥ぁ-ヾ MakeCharacterWord = 1(yes) or 0(no) RemoveSpaces = 1(yes) or 0(no) If you select MakeCharacterWord = 0, you must insert spaces to indicate word boundaries. Thanks for that very useful information. I was an "early adopter" of LWT. I now have both LWT and FLTR running in Ubuntu. I exported the LWT terms to FLTR. Excellent. Both have their advantages. However, if LWT and/or FLTR want to move from "excellent" to "absolutely outstanding", then I have a suggestion. I know it would not be easy. But it would revolutionise language learning. MAKE IT WORK DIRECTLY IN A BROWSER!!!!! As a browser selectable add-on that would add all (or most) of the features of LWT to a browser, most-importantly colouring the words, it would immediately become the most productive language learning tool in the world. Because it could then become a normal part of your target language browsing. Now you have to copy the text from the browser (often hard to get multiple parts of it), start the LWT application, open a New Text, paste it in and then open it for reading. It's not possible due to certain restrictions in browsers (e.g. no read/write access to local files). I would have programmed LWT that way if it were feasible.... Not sure it would be practical, considering that you're relying on your text being available online (if I'm understanding you correctly). The text has to be stored somewhere, and online text has a tendency to be changed over time by its author(s). Even FLTR stores its text in a file on your computer, just not in a database. I just started using LWT and really like it, but for some reason my preferred German dictionary (dict.cc) always comes up as a pop-up, rather than opening in the bottom right frame (which I would prefer). Is there a way to fix this, or is it just a quirk of the dict.cc website? There doesn't seem to be anything about pop-ups vs. frames in the "settings" section.

Some web dictionaries (like dict.cc) do not allow to be opened within a frame set. They "break out" of the frame set and use the whole browser window. To overcome this, an asterisk can be put in front of the dictionary URL in the language settings: *http://de-en.dict.cc/?s=### (look into the language settings!). With an asterisk in front, the web dictionary opens in a separate window, and you are able to study the text without problems. If you don't like this, you have to find a different web dictionary that does not have this frame set breakout behavior... lwtproject on 22 August 2012 |
My suggestion focuses on making LWT more likely to be used, and more enjoyable to use for regular browsing. I understand the difficulties to operate within a browser. But "browsing" or reading your favourite L2 web sites in plain text, after stripping out the plain text) just doesn't contribute to constant use of LWT. Further suggestion: It is very easy to "Save Page" in a browser. Could there be a bare bones "LWT browser" that could read the saved HTML pages with the current LWT functionality? In other words, instead of directly reading your favourite L2 pages (such as daily news), you save a number of the pages you want to read. Then by right clicking on these saved HTML pages, you could directly open each of them in an LWT basic browser. That would greatly improve my LWT usage. You could open a webpage - disable the style - save the page as a text - cut the parts that are not the text you want to read and open the result in lwt. Too long ? Do you know learning languages is a long process ?
Maybe it is possible to add an option in lwt - to open a webpage in the reading box of lwt. However if lwt does that - you are not ready yet because where you read a text from a webpage - lwt will read a text full of tags - a webpage could have colors that inerfer with lwt coloring and there will be parts of the texts that have no interest for your learning. I see, thanks for the information. So I'm guessing there's no way to tell which dictionaries will accept frames and which won't until you've tried them? It's not a big deal, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong. :) ETA: One more question – sorry for treating this thread like a tech-help area, but it's the quickest way to get information, it seems. I added Croatian as a new language on LWT, but for some reason every time a special Croatian character comes up in a word (ć, č, š, ž, đ, and their capital equivalents), that word gets split directly after the special character. So common words such as "će" become two words: "ć" and "e". I tried adding all the special characters to the "RegExp Word Characters" line in the language settings – maybe I did it wrong? I just added them onto the end of the list of characters already listed there, so the total information entered in that line looked like this: "a-zA-ZÀ-ÖØ-öø-ȳćčšžđĆČŠŽĐ". Yes. All those extra steps cost time and effort that could much better be used in reading and understanding. And more importantly, if you have to do all those steps for every article and web page you read, well, you simply will not do nearly as many, if any at all.
Yes. That is why I am looking for ways to make it a shorter process, mostly devoid of laborious, mind-numbing manual manipulation that saps your energy and wears you down. Look at where we have come with the pop-up instant translations. Surely nobody would advocate exchanging that for look-up with a paper bilingual dictionary. That is absolutely correct. You can either enter a list of characters or character ranges x-y, but in the case of a range you must look up in a unicode table what characters are in that range. You can mix individual characters and ranges, too, like in your case. lwtproject on 23 August 2012 |

I for the life of me could not get learning with texts to work...
For those who suck with computers, but like Lingq and like the idea of LWT, there is a website called lingro.com which is kind of like those programs. If you study Chinese or Japanese, then you probably know Perapera, which gives you the pronunciation and meaning of any Chinese/Japanese you scroll over. This is basically the same thing, except it just works with the big European languages. It makes any word clickable, and when you click it the translation comes up. You can also import files into lingro. I'd still prefer to use LWT though cause I like the idea of being able to keep track of the number of words I know :P ZombieKing on 27 August 2012 |

That is a great web site and the concept of developing free bilingual dictionaries in this way is outstanding. I have used this site and have added to its dictionaries. I would encourage others to use it too. Thanks for highlighting lingro. Maybe the developers will add some of LWT's features. But back to LWT: The coloured text, the offline dictionary (assisted by the online dictionaries), and the categories of how well you know the words, make LWT much better and more addictive, especially if LWT worked directly on browser text. How I should learn with korean? If I have word like 책상에 noun+particle. How can I make two separated meaning without spaces, like 책상 and 에?
Only thing I can find is "remove spaces", but that won't work, because korean uses spaces... EDIT: There seems to be also problem with japanese. Because in japanese there isin't any spaces. "make each character not a word" should be used with Japan. But it is some what clumsy. Or maybe "Show All" should be turn off. Yufina on 04 April 2013 |

Thank you for this software! I've been using it for around a month now and it's been extremely helpful.
It's true that it's much better for certain languages. For example in Greek I have to save the same word in feminine, in neuter, in masculine, in plural, in accusative, in genitive, etc. Also with verbs I have many forms. However in Dutch I just store nouns twice (singular and plural), and same goes for adjectives or verbs... it's much less effort! Gomorritis on 06 April 2013 |
I've been using LWT to learn both non-inflected (Chinese) and very very highly inflected languages (Latin and Finnish). Yet I seldom save several different inflected forms of the same word. First, for Finnish and Latin, I use the "romanization" field to indicate the dictionary and other basic forms (ex. for a Latin verb: 1st pers. sing. ind. pres. + past + participle; for Finnish: nominative + other interesting forms if any). Then, when I study, I usually test myself to see if I can recall that basic form from the inflected form in the text. Then, in general, when I see other inflected forms of the same word in other texts, I can recognize them and, bingo, the word is known. No need to add the partitive plural of a noun or the subjunctive pluperfect of a verb. If on the other hand I can't recognize such a form then, and only then, I can add it to the list of terms. In general one, sometimes two, infrequently three forms are enough - those that you actually come across in real texts. No need to add the whole morphological paradigm. If there are many word forms, it's a good idea (as a beginner) to save all of them in LWT. After some time you will just mark new word forms with "Well Known" or "Ignore". lwtproject on 09 April 2013 |
You are right, and this is what I have been doing so far. Still, with less inflected languages, whenever you first open an easy text, most words already appear with a white background, so you immediately know that you know most words. It's mostly the psychological effect: you are more aware of the progress you are making and makes you feel much better. When I open a text in Greek there are still many words that I do know appear in blue, it somehow depresses me. Then I start noticing I do know many words in blue cause I saw them in other forms and start feeling better again. Or maybe it's just me, hehe. Gomorritis on 09 April 2013 |

About the difference between active texts and archived texts: Active texts They have been parsed and tokenized according to the rules defined for the language. The result is stored in a cache of sentences and text items. They use a lot of space in the database. Reading with term creation/editing and dictionary lookup is possible. Testing of a stored term that occurs in the text, is possible. A terms will be tested within the context of any sentence(s) in all active texts (the number of sentences may be set (1, 2, or 3) as a preference). Archived texts They are not parsed and tokenized, only the text is stored. Compared with active texts, they don't use much space in the database, because no sentences and no text items are stored. Reading with term creation/editing and dictionary lookup is not possible. Testing of a stored term, that occurs in the text, is possible, but a term will be tested ONLY within the context of the sentence(s) that has/have been stored with the term in the sentence field, if the term does not occur in any active text. lwtproject on 23 April 2013 |

Thank you for this software! I have been looking into language learning websites recently and I have registered on Lingq. I like the idea of a software that is completely free and Opensource though so I am considering switching to LWT instead. Just to be sure to understand, in LWT, each person has to download their own texts and audios right? Or is there some kind of library of content shared by users?

Yes, you are right. There is no "LWT shared library". Within LWT, you can use any text (via Copy and Paste) with or without audio you'll find on the Internet. Well, I had already read that, I was just wondering about the advantages, because it seems to me that it's all disadvantages for archived texts except for "They use a lot of space in the database.", and considering most people have plenty of hard drive space nowadays, it doesn't seem a big disadvantage. Today LWT Version 1.5.1 has been released.
In version 1.5.0, released in April 2013, I had introduced the creation/edit/printout and display of hyperliteral translations as interlinear text. Today's new version 1.5.1 brings you some nice features when reading such texts: Clicking the "T" or "A" lightbulb icons hides/shows the complete text or all annotations. You may also click on a single term or a single annotation to show or to hide it. This enables you to test yourself or to concentrate on one text only. Romanizations, if available, appear now while hovering over a term. Any plans to be able to automatically translate words instead of clicking on just the ones you don't know. I've been
looking for a way to make a quick, rough, interlinear text and this apps is works well except I know many of the words I just don't want to click on all the ones I already know. It makes you choose the definition and type it in rather than just automatically using Google Translate or something to translate all the words. Or maybe I'm just using this wrong, any help? As LWT is a software for any L1-L2 language pair you can imagine, this would be very difficult (and costly) to implement. Even Google Translate does not support every language and often produces wrong results, and it would cost money to use the Translate API. The alternative http://glosbe.com/ seems promising and is free... Maybe I'll integrate Glosbe at some time in the future. In language learning there is no "fast lane". Clicking on an unknown word, reading the possible definitions, and thinking about them, is part of the learning process. lwtproject on 09 June 2013 |

LWT 1.5.2 (June 09 2013) has been released today.
New features: Easy navigation to the previous and the next text (according to current text filters and sort order) is now possible. "Backup" does not store anymore the tables 'sentences' and 'textitems'. These tables are now automatically recreated (by reparsing the texts) within "Restore". This software is outstanding and the person behind it is amazing. I am using LWT extensively (70texts, all words 20000) and I had problems to restore. Mr. lwtproject helped me in 10 hours!! (night excluded) during the weekend and apparently made a new version of LWT 1.5.2 that fixes a lot. I wonder if an other paid software company could be that quick and that good!
I understand some will of suggestions as lwtproject actively encourages to do so but if it stays as it is I would still be extremely happy. I cannot understand complaints about the installation process etc and to me it is like bringing the water to a dying person in a desert and he would complain:''Damn, that is too cold!'' Just want to inform you that LWT version 1.5.3 has been released.
What's new? It is now possible to create and to use not only ONE set of LWT tables within one database. You are now able to create and use unlimited LWT table sets within one database (as space and MySQL limitations permit). This feature is especially useful for users who want to set up a multi user environment with a set of tables for each user. You can also create one table set for every language you study - this allows you to create different term/text tags for each language. Being able to save the words, learn them and export to Anki is something I longed for for a long time! Basic Installation Help Request
Please forgive me if this is not the proper forum for asking for installation tips, but I am at my wit's end in trying to figure out how to get LWT up and running. My only language of interest to learn is Italian. I have XAMPP Control Panel and also Bitname for XAMPP installed on my computer. Everything is explained in great detail at http://lwt.sourceforge.net/#installwin Create a directory "lwt" at "C:\xampp\htdocs". Copy the whole LWT stuff you have already extracted to this new directory "lwt". Rename the file connect_xampp.inc.php to connect.inc.php. Run C:\xampp\setup_xampp.bat to initialize XAMPP on your system, if not already done. Run C:\xampp\xampp-control.exe. Start Apache and MySQL by clicking the start buttons. If the firewall asks whether to block, click "Do not block". LWT can now be started in your web browser, go to: http://localhost/lwt. I have tried three times unsuccessfully over the last couple of weeks to post to the LWT help forum. I post the message but it does not appear. So I am going to take the liberty of posting my problem here.
I have been an LWT user since the beginning, and I love it. Thanks for the huge amount of time that has been put into developing LWT. I have the same problem as Pavel (on the Help Forum) but I can't seem to fix it. I am using Ubuntu 11.10. with sampp, and Firefox 14.0.1. My version of lwt_1.4.8 works perfectly. However, I tried 1.5.4 and now 1.5.8. I saved the media directory and the connect.inc.php file, and I cleared the browser cache, all per instructions. In both cases, everything seems to work ok except the Read page. It displays ok with the colours on different words. The hover menu with the translation works fine. But nothing happens if I click, double click or right click on a word. There is nothing in the right-hand window. No editing of words, and no dictionaries. When I go back to lwt_1.4.8, everything works fine. Any suggestions? Thanks. EDIT: Additional information. I am sorry, there are no posts from you in the moderation queue of the LWT help forum. So it must be a problem on Sourceforge's side. To answer your question: After an update of the lwt files in the /var/www/lwt directory (or a similar directory that your web server uses to store your lwt files and other web content), you must execute these commands on Mac OS X or Linux/Unix: cd /var/www/ sudo chmod -R 777 lwt Otherwise the web server can not access the lwt files due to insufficient rights. Yes. That did the trick. I went back and looked at the Ubuntu Install instructions and I see that this information was given there. But I hadn't looked there because this was not an initial install and lwt_1.4.8 was working fine. I had never needed that chmod for any upgrades up to and including 1.4.8. Under Upgrade instructions, I now I see the the chmod instructions under the Mac/SAMPP instructions but I didn't look there. There seems to be no Ubuntu Upgrade instructions. Maybe that would be something worth adding. By the way, my Ubuntu install is in \var\www\htdocs\lwt, so the chmod instruction would be from \var\www\htdocs\ Thanks again. Much appreciated. As we are talking about a local web server on a hopefully private PC in a private network, the difference between "chmod 777" (world writable) and "chmod 775" (world readable & executable) is not so important. How do you rate words?
At the moment, I mark words I know passively as 'well known' because it makes it easier to read when just the trickier ones are coloured. Then my idea was to sort all the words I don't know (marked as 1) after frequency and then learn them one by one. However, there are words I understand passively but probably wouldn't be able to come up with when writing so I guess using the 1-5 rating makes sense. The question is how you use it. The same goes for moving them from 2 to 3, etc. Any rules? Stefan on 06 November 2014 |

I created a file so you can import texts from supported sites (such as Langsam
gesprochene Nachrichten) with a simple click. If you have LWT installed at http://lwt.allalla.com and save the file as import.php you can import a text simply by adding http://lwt.allalla.com/import.php?url= in front of your URL. http://www.dw.de/13112014-langsam-gesprochene-nachrichten/a- 18059979 Would become: http://lwt.allalla.com/import.php?url=http://www.dw.de/13112 014-langsam- gesprochene- nachrichten/a-18059979 The script will automatically fetch the title & text from DW and import it to LWT. I'm using the software TextExpander so I can write ;import and it magically transforms into http://lwt.allalla.com/import.php?url=. Thanks. I've updated the script with a fix for SlowGerman although it's a problem that they don't keep to one standard. The current fix covers the five versions I could find but I didn't check all 90 episodes. I also added a simple function to fetch and include the last mp3-file linked on the website. It worked on the two pages i tested but it's not really a priority since I'm using iTunes. Unfortunately I haven't figured out how the tags functions work. I could do a hack but there's always the risk that the system gets messed up when you don't rely on standard functions that are in place to clean up the DB when you delete something. To each his or her own. So many colors distract me, and I figure I either know a word or I don't, that a word is either passive or active for me. So, after I import a new text, I immediately convert all 1's in that text to 3's (and only that text should have 1's anyway). The color for Number 3 distracts me less than the other available colors. When I am sure I know a word, I convert it from 3 to 5. I no longer mark words as "Well Known." Instead I mark them as 5, so the definition will still be there, just in case. This concerns the matter of backups. A month or two ago, tiring of the constant need to stop and enter a definition for a new word, I decided to try something different. I am studying Ancient Greek, which has a lot more word forms than most modern Western languages, let alone more than English, so there are a lot more definitions to enter. I found a somewhat modified source of the Ancient Greek words and definitions that Perseus uses, and uploaded them into the LWT database. The scheme worked, more or less, but there were over 900,000 words from the source. When LWT attempts to back up that many records, it hits a time-out at the 5-minute mark and cannot produce a backup file. Without going into the messy technical details*, I go to the database itself and use a MySQL tool to backup (aka download) the data.
Consequently, this is not a problem for me, and since I doubt anyone else intends to upload data stemming from the Perseus source file, this will probably not be a problem for anyone else. Unless some aspiring polyglots use LWT to study 10 or 12 languages. Under those circumstances, taking all their vocabulary combined, they might hit the 900,000+ word/phrase mark. * Except to say the problem does not lie with MySql, which can handle a lot more than 900,000 records. In such a case, I would recommend that you create a database for each language and duplicate the LWT directory with a new version of connect.inc.php accordingly. Then you should also not have any problems with database backup, etc. If you have still problems, increase in "php.ini" the server parameters "post_max_size" and "upload_max_filesize" to 999M, and restart the web server. lwtproject on 08 February 2016 |

I recommend the official version - it is IMHO bug-free. I have tried also the "improved" version on Github, but it seems quite buggy. You must install LWT into the web directory that is specified in the server software documentation. lwtproject on 07 April 2016 |

I've begun using it for Japanese and I'm seeing doubled characters. If I have メトル as a multi word term (because it treats every character as a word) I will often see the last character doubled (and marked as not known). It's really annoying. I had to stick to inserting spaces via MeCab to avoid this, but I would like to learn reading original texts... Zireael on 26 March 2017 |

I've made a clean install of LWT 1.4.5 on EasyPHP and imported my 2019 database backup onto
it. However I am now getting 1. just blank frames (no texts) for the old texts (can see them via the edit page though) and 2. the following error when trying to add a text using the "Save and open" button: Invalid Query: select LgName, LgDict1URI, LgDict2URI, LgGoogleTranslateURI, LgTextSize, LgRemoveSpaces, LgRightToLeft from languages where LgID = 3. the following error when trying to add a text using the "Save" button: *** Error: Field 'TxAnnotatedText' doesn't have a default value / Sentences deleted: 1 / Textitems deleted: 1 / Sentences added: 1 / Text items added: 1 *** No new text is added either way. eugrus on 27 February 2021 |
