as a second language of course. How fluent are you? I've never met someone (either on the
net or offline) who knows the language proficiently. Does anyone know someone in real
life who's fluent in Basque?

Replies:
I had the pleasure of working in the same Department as Larry Trask who was one of the authorities on Basque. His wikipedia entry with links to some articles and his obituary can be found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Trask - here.

Yes. I've worked closely with several Spanish colleagues now who are native speakers of Basque. It's a fascinating language, and from what I can gather, there are several dialects too.

An exceptional complicated one isn't it. And very old - I understand there is an expression for "ceiling" which means "roof of the cave.

Sort of on topic, does anyone have any videos of people with Basque as a first language speaking Spanish? I met some when I was on holiday, and I thought their Spanish accent was hilarious with the drawn out vowels on the ends of words. Wanted to show an example to a friend, but try as I might I can't find anything on YouTube!

Good one! I briefly considered asking the same question about Welsh but I do not know if I'm ready to wait two years for the answer. ;) Sjheiss, I hope you will find fellow learners, do not despair.

One of my best friends is a native Euskera speaker, and seeing him talking to other
people in Basque (Batua of course), is no doubt the most amazing thing i“ve seen live,
language-wise.
BTW: New Real Madrid player Asier Illaramendi is a native Basque speaker, you can see him
speaking easily in Youtube videos, and he struggles strongly with Spanish.

I just saw an interview with him and I do not understand how you can say that he struggles with Spanish. He
pronounced a hell of a lot more "s" than I would in my Andalusian dialect, but apart from that he sounds
absolutely native to me. There are a lot of different accents within Spain, but I would not have thought twice
about declaring him a native Spanish speaker. What specifically did you feel he was struggling with?

He comes from Mutriku, Gipuzkoa, and I know for a fact he is a native speaker of Basque.
He didn't start learning Spanish until he was older. Besides having a strong accent as
you say, he has problem stringing together phrases.
Here you can see him talking he“s native language where you can see the difference with
him speaking his second language:

I've watched a couple of Youtube interviews with him in Spanish, and I can't say that he seems to have much more
trouble stringing together sentences and answering questions than other footballers in similar situations. I don't
doubt that he's native speaker of Basque or that he didn't learn Spanish at home nor that he feels more comfortable
speaking Basque than Spanish, but I haven't seen any evidence that he is actually struggling in Spanish.

As far as I know,Illaramendi speaks Spanish like a native speaker with a basque accent.
