Bonjour à tous!
I've decided to tackle French seriously now, and by telling you through this log, I hope to keep to it.
The actual goal: over the next 3 months before 2016 comes to a gradual close, French will be my full-time mission. I realistically have the time to devote AT A MINIMUM 3 hours a day working on the language, potentially a whole lot more given the opportunities I have; I'm a final year university student, but my workload won't be too heavy until next spring. My plan is to reach for the stars and see how high I can get: B2 or C1?
My current all round level of French is a weak B1. Quite honestly, my skills are all over the place. My knowledge of grammar and vocabulary is quite strong, but applying it in practice can be a headache. My general comprehension is satisfactory (equal in both listening and reading), and I don't quite struggle with writing as such. HOWEVER, my ability to speak is absolutely dreadful. Dreadful, dreadful, dreadful! Horrendous! You could console me with a "but hey, that's perfectly normal!", but not when I tell you that my live-in girlfriend is French!
All in all in the past 12 months, I've put in the bare minimum, never more than an hour or two a day over a sporadic period. Little wonder at my sub par success then!
Ultimately, the goal is to comfortably communicate with my girlfriend's family the next time we travel to Paris (none of them speak English), so there will be a huge emphasis on speaking and oral work. I am also an avid reader, and as my local library has a huge collection of French books (+ the French literature at my uni of course), I may give myself a reading challenge too (5 books by Christmas?).
Anyway, this will be my first serious log (I think I once tried one ages ago when I was an on and off language learner???). I would like to keep this going well and truly through 2017!

Just a reminder that the majority of
members have moved to www.forum.language-
learners.org after software problems here. You are
welcome to post here or there or on both but note
that you need to register on the new site (ie your
HTLAL name and password won't work there). Don't
worry - sign up is much simpler over on LLOrg

Thanks for the heads up Rhian! I hadn't realised. I'll get on to making a new account there then.
