The book is tightly packed with numerous grammatical and cultural observations that are easy to understand and entertaining to read. Audio The audio is interesting but the various speakers they hired back in 1972 pronounce each sentence as a ghastly slowish pace (slow--ish--pa--ce ...). This makes it easy to catch every last nuance for the beginner but can get on your nerves after some time. More importantly, it does not prepare you for the fast flow or regular conversations. Although this is a problem with the program, it is not a huge one. Regional variations Serbo-Croat is a language with many 'dialects'. Some are written in Cyrillic, some in Latin script. Assimil did a fine job teachinb both Croatian and Serbian in the same program. The first 49 lessons are written in Latin script. Beginning with lesson 50, all Serbo-Croatian text is written in the beautiful Serbian Cyrillic script. A well-made chapter has the same text written in Croatian and in both cursive (handwritten) and printed Cyrillic so that you can compare them and learn the Cyrillic equivalents for each sound.
