Pasear por la calle Mayor significa recorrer la historia de la Villa y Corte. Se ha dicho de ella que tiene todas las edades de Madrid, desde el Magerit árabe encerrado en las murallas, hasta la ciudad más señorial y cortesana de la época de los Austurias. Tuvo tres nombres : Almudena, de Puerta Cerrada, o de la Plaza del Alamillo. En ella se erigen algunos de los pocos edificios modernistas de la Villa, como la fachada del edificio de la Compañía Colonial, en el número 4, obra de Antonio Palacios, o la del número 5, levantada por López Sallaberry. De la calle Mayor sale la popular calle de la Pasa, donde se situaban las oficinas de la Vicaría madrileña, por lo que todavía circula en los corrillos el dicho de “La que no pasa por la calle de la Pasa no se casa”.

Walking along the Calle Mayor means reliving the history of the Capital and Court. It has been said that the street “contains all the ages of the city”, from the Moorish town of Magerit enclosed within the city’s walls, to the most stately and courtly Madrid of the Hapsburg period. It has had three other names in the past: Almudena, de Puerta Cerrada, and de la Plaza del Alamillo. On the street are also some of Madrid’s few Art-Nouveau buildings, such as that of the Compañía Colonial, at number 4, which was designed by Antonio Palacios, and the building at number 5, erected by López Sallaberry. Off of the Calle Mayor is the ever-popular Calle de la Pasa, which was once the site of the Vicariate of Madrid.
