Description of what is on the sound file:
Donelaitis was the first important poet who wrote in Lithuanian. He lived in Eastern Prussia who belonged to the German kingdom of Prussia and was a Lutheran priest by profession. Having a classical education(Latin and old Greek) he saw the affinity of Lithuanian to the classical languages and decided to write a Lithuanian poem in classical hexameter. This was his poem Four seasons of year. He did not publish the poem since only illiterate peasant spoke Lithuanian at that time but rather he used to read the excerpts of the poem to his parishioners. The poem was finally published in 1822 by Ludwig Rhesa, professor of the Koenigsberg university with a translation in German. Donelaitis also wrote several poems in German - it seems he was a talented poet. Unfortunately he did not practice his German Lyra too much.
