Has anyone heard of this series? I know at least two books exist for each of English,
French and Italian. But is there any else? I could find little information about it: the famous Italian site about natural method seems to be closed, and this forum only has a mention of possible existence of a Russian book. Some decades ago you could see ads about "Naturmetoden" in Swedish magazines, maybe it's the same method. I found almost the whole series (~50 booklets) at a second-hand bookstore in the late 1990s; English being the target language. The method itself is about learning vocabulary and grammar in context, call it comprehensible input if you want. The illustrations are often in an older style (typical for advertisements from the 40s-50s).

The one success of this series has been Ørberg's Lingua Latina, which is still a commonly used textbook
with multiple levels and many ancillaries. Ørberg published it himself in Europe for many years and sold the rights to distribute it in America to Focus press. You can see the webpage for the series here My understanding is that Ørberg's books were more successful because he didn't just create from scratch, but drew heavily on previous Latin textbooks written on the "direct method," such as Avellanus' Palaestra (here) and especially Paine and Mainwaring's Primus Annus (here). Ørberg's textbook far exceeds these, but they at least gave him some framework to begin with. I've looked for the volumes of the Nature Method series in other languages, but never laid my hands anything. I have found the french book and the Spanish book, but I'm not sure about their legal status though. The French

I think "Naturmetoden" is what it is called in Swedish, and I believe it is the same method. The author said at least 7 more English books would be published, but it is amazing to know more than 50 once existed. Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata indeed came out from the same institute as far as I know. And yes, while others have faded in the current of history, Ørberg's has risen to the top league. You can still track down their English, Italian and French methods, both online and through used book stores. I believe they must exist for other languages as well, but I could gather little information about them, except the Russian one in your thread. The elementary books I have for the 3 modern European languages are indeed dull. But the second level looks fine, and if there are more books at that level or higher, I would be happy to have them. Even the first level books are not that bad as there are worse materials for monolingual Chinese students. I would not hesitate to recommend at least the English books to my nephews, to help them build up their first 4000 words and basic grammar. Hope is long lost in mandatory education. (By the way I am only in my early 20s.) Hampie: I could not locate any Spanish book, both in stores and online. Would you mind telling me where to look for? There was a blog post at the Italian site that sells Lingua Latina, and the very famous Italian version of Athenaze, where they listed and linked to several other methods similar to those, among them Spanish. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||
