OK, I had a look at Jeffers picture, not so confused anymore.
Thanks

These discussions are following a predictable pattern:
1. someone asks if something "counts"
2. Someone (often Serpent) says if X counts then this should
3. Some of us point out that it doesn't and why
4. Serpent thinks people are attacking her learning methods (honestly, we're not)
5. Someone tells Serpent how awesome she is (and she is!)
6. Someone says "Instead of debating, can't we all study languages?"
7. Cristina gets frustrated (like she needs more stress?)

#8. Everyone gets tired of the "debating" and at least one or two people think of dropping out of the Super Challenge because of it. And a lot of us consider dropping out of the discussion completely (unsubscribing to the thread), and then we risk losing out on a lot of positive discussion, updates, and recommendations over the next 18 months.

2. Because for me that's about using logic, not about stretching the rules more and more. It was never explicitly said that there's a bias towards fiction and video (because who will explicitly admit they are biased?..) I'm not unhappy with the rules but with the inconsistency and the general ideology so to say.
4. It's not just about me but also the person who asked, often learning a language that isn't Spanish/French/German. I don't want them to shrug and leave, or to be forced to watch more movies than they want, just because they want to join in the fun. I instantly sympathize with everyone who doesn't want to limit themselves to movies. I value creativity highly, and I hate when it's seen as bending/stretching the rules. You see it as Cristina being asked to allow more and more things, I see it as more and more things being explicitly excluded. It doesn't help when people sarcastically ask whether eating French fries counts. New participants actually appear to face quite a bit of hostility.
If I don't stand up for them, then who will? Do we want more participants, do we want more people to finish the challenge? Especially more people learning something other than the major Romance languages and German. Given how the previous challenge ended, to me it's pretty obvious that we need to be more inclusive and supportive.
Also, it's not a books and movies challenge, it didn't even start as such. It was originally created as such, but non-movie audio was allowed before the original challenge started in May 2012. To me treating movies as superior is about as logical as digging up the original idea about two books being 500 pages and not 100.

I do admit that I made the mistake of being too enthusiastic about posts like this. And yes, Jeffers got several votes, but as far as I can tell, this kind of peer pressure was never made into something official. I always took audiobooks and podcasts to be just examples, not more or less the only non-video materials allowed.
From now on I will definitely link newbies to the infographic, and explain the thing about fiction/video. I reserve the right to say I personally consider the proposed activity just as worthy as movies though.

Actually the rules were quite simple:
Read books
Watch films & tv shows

What are you talking about? What peer pressure?
Is he running for office or something?

The unofficial pressure to count only the "core" things, or only video and whatnot. As I said, I'd be more comfortable with movies officially counting as more than with this kind of unwritten rules.
