Is anyone else joining the 6-week Challenge for German on February 1st? I've joined and hope to have a burst of progress to show for it.

I think I'm still below intermediate in German, but I've decided to go with Swedish this time.
The challenge is really helpful if you really do the best you can. Look for pages in my log that describe 6WC of August'14. Basically I watched and read a lot, used Memeise extensively and completed a grammar book. I'm afraid that now I don't even remember the words I've learned, but being tithe second best in your TL was quite a bit satisfactory :) And feel free to follow my Twitter, because I'm gonna record activity on German too :) 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||||||||

I'll do both "challenges" at once here.
------------------------------------------------------------ ------- Mein Niveau in Deutsch ist noch ziemlich niedrig weil ich habe Deutsch allein für zwei Monate gelernt, aber ich muss jetzt mich stärker zu widmen weil ich im Mai nach Deutschland für das Polyglott Treffen fahren werde. Bis bald! :) My level in German is still quite low because I've only studied German for two months, but I must now dedicate myself more strongly because in May I'll go to Germany for the Polyglot Gathering. See you! ------------------------------------------------------------ ------- Books: I don't think I've ever read a German book, even tranlated to Portuguese or English. Music: I quite like German songs, especially bands like Juli, Die Toten Hosen, Edguy.. Films: I really like German movies. Does anyone have any tips on the intermediate plateau stage in this beast of a language?
Right now I can read Harry Potter and get the gist, but I don't know every word in a sentence nor can I remember many of which I've already read. My only real intermediate plateau was in French 3 years ago and since I've only studied Romance languages intensely I haven't had one since. I've tried graded readers but the ones I've used seem to be too easy for me. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||

Are you already familiar with the story in HP? In my case, what helped me greatly was reading a book that takes place in a familiar culture, Finland for me ;) Also, keep reading :)

Not past the 3rd book, no. I'm really only reading it because when I read it in French it was a nice bridge to intermediate/upper intermediate, I don't care all too much about the story.

As Serpent says, keep reading, reading, reading. I was able to read HP relatively well about a year and a half ago, but I'm still at an intermediate stage after another 20000 pages. :) I am at a higher intermediate stage, but still... I think the most important thing is to find something you find interesting, that pushes you a bit, but not so much that you only have a vague idea of the gist of the story. If there are more than 5-10 words per printed page you don't know then it's probably too hard. I recently switched over to extensive reading, but for a long time I used a Kindle and pop-up dictionary that allowed me to read books significantly above my level. I think it's fine to guess words, but it's probably more effective to look them up if you want to learn. I think it's also important to keep hearing the language a lot. So if you can get hold of any movies or tv series that would be great. The more the better. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||

I think I'm coming down with a flu so I don't know whether this time I'll participate or not. Even if I do I won't choose German, but French. I want to work on German every day, but in small amounts. I need to build my vocabulary and the last time I tried to go massive input style I failed. Big time XD
This is quite my problem, although unlike you I'm probably between an advanced beginner/low intermediate level. I tried to read the first Harry Potter book in German around a year ago since I had already read the books in English, but had to give up. I obviously knew what was going on thanks to my previous readings, but i was spending way too much time looking up words. I also tried to read a lot of different texts and use Anki to memorise new words, but I ended up adding too many and that turned out to be quite unsuccessful. At the moment I‘m reading a book which seems to be slightly easier than Harry Potter as well as reading others found on the Children’s Library website. These books are usually short and have very little unknown words to me so it’s not hard to remember them. I’m also trying to be more selective with what I add to Anki.
I agree, you may not look up new words as soon as you see them to focus on the general meaning, but sooner or later you will have to if you plan to extend your vocabulary. 1 person has voted this message useful |
