I've been at a loss for this month's challenge ... until I remembered that there's a
Spanish wine seminar this afternoon at our local wine store. I'm hoping for some language
and culture with this one!

In case anyone hasn't seen it on the main Htlal "Specific Languages" page, Bakunin's posted a
link to a series of France Culture
podcasts (look for "Le français est une chance"),
exploring some regions/cities of the French diaspora.

Anyone have any April Challenge ideas?
My suggestion - in honor of April Fool's Day (I think that's international, yeah?), let's
go for humor. Tell a joke in your TL, tell a funny story, post a video clip, discuss your
favorite comedy, anything along those lines.

of course, fezmond, please take part!
Here's my find for French: Kaamelott Livre 1, Episode 09: Le maître d'armes
This is my new favorite show. Some clips are online, but I found a copy on eBay with English subtitles. The humor revolves involves word-play more than jokes with punch lines. In this episode, Arthur and his Master of Arms exchange increasingly nasty insults in order to get them in the combat mood.
Here is the opening:
Guenièvre: Dites, c’est pas aujourd’hui votre entrainement avec le maître d’armes ?
Arthur: Je sais pas… Je sais plus quel jour c’est.
Maître d’armes (crie en voix off): Ah ah Sire !
Guenièvre: Say, isn't today your training day with the master at arms?
Arthur: I don't know, I don't know what day it is.
Maître d’armes (outside): Ah ah Sire ! I'm waiting for you! Or do you prefer that I tell the world that the king is a little twink who pisses in his frock at the idea of a fight!
Arthur: Yeah, I think it's today …
Full scripts are available at hypnoweb. It really helps to have the script in front of you when you watch!
Some of my favorite lines:
Maître (se remet en position et crie) : En garde ma mignonne!
Arthur (soupire puis lève les yeux au ciel mais ne bouge pas) : Non… C’est obligé les prénoms féminins ?
Master: En garde, my darling!
Arthur: Is it really necessary to use the feminine pronouns?
---
Maître : En garde espèce de vieille pute dégarnie!
Master: En garde, you old naked whore!
---
Arthur: Bon alors en garde ! (réfléchis) …. Fils d’unijambiste.
Maître (triste) : Quoi ? Sire…
... son of a one-legged peasant.
Master (sad): What? Sire ... But ... That is not an insult, sire, that is true!
- And things go downhilll after this ...

To my delight, the pun in this cartoon seems to work in both English and French! And possibly even Spanish,
Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian? Can someone else confirm that? (And perhaps like to translate it?) A pun which
works in all our target Romance languages would be pretty sweet.
Le boulet de canon humain.
Il a raté le filet!
Tellement tragique!
