I'm the opposite of Kerrie - I kept up my French all year, but my Spanish fell a bit by
the wayside. The Super Challenge has been fantastic for that. I probably only
actively studied French five months out of the year, but was reading or watching movies
each week.

I naively thought that I would be at native reading speed this time two years ago. I
had no concept how much reading one actually had to do to reach this point! It's been
rewarding and sobering. I'm also looking forward to doing a Super Challenge with
Spanish for the next round.

I'm game to be on a TAC French team again, and think that Captain Tasty Onions has a
nice ring to it. I want to push my French in the early part of this year, and have a
ten day solo trip planned to France in April / May. After that I'll probably segue
into lots more reading. And I might stalk Kerrie if she joins a Spanish team, and
GaryB if he's on an Italian team.

Year-end wrap up with 3 weeks left to go? Why the rush? At any rate, I might not do much else this year in French
or Italian, so why not.

Italian was neglected all year and finally took on increased importance shortly before my trip. I took a level up
during and shortly after the trip, and for a month or so kept learning and got to where I could write reasonably well
at a "basic conversational" level or so. I've still never done much speaking, so the quick recall isn't really there. In
the end, I managed to get to the "basically can read" (I have some 400-500 unlogged reading pages, btw) and
"basically can understand radio/tv" stage with a relatively small amount of overall effort. I never got past the first
50-some lessons of Assimil and just looked up the grammar tables for conjugation. At this point though, I may be
letting Italian drop until the next time I might see a trip to Italy in the foreseeable future.

French I did more of than Italian, but very little formal study this year (I avoid formal study whenever possible). I
did get to the "can read pretty well" level and the "basically can understand radio/tv" stage, so overall better than
Italian. Using an Assimil course with a French base should be pretty easy now. I'm not sure if I plan to focus much
on French next year either, but I'll definitely be using it, and probably starting another "half-super challenge" type
thing, which should be MUCH easier now than when I started and couldn't even imagine reading a book in French,
even an easy one. I may finally try using Assimil Le Hebreu, and that alone would be good practice, not having
done significant L3 via L2 work before.

Thanks, Tastyonions! - And I'd certainly be glad to join the team, if you'll have me.   I notice that
Cavessa has also offered [on the TAC 2014 signup thread] to lead a French team. But I'm sure you and she
could figure out something: co-leadership, having two teams (? will have to find Brun Ugle's post of last year
for her suggestions re. team sizes)? Or, on the other hand, she may be delighted if someone else is willing to
pick up the French team reins, as it were...

Here's a fantastic short video in French, with English subtitles:

Ne serait-ce qu'une seconde

From the clip: 20 cancer patients participated in a unique makeover experience.
They were invited to a studio. Their hair and makeup were completely redone.

During the transformation, they were asked to keep their eyes shut.
A photographer then immortalized the moment they opened their eyes.

Kanewai, I saw that the other day. It was so cool. Not your typical makeovers. :D

Anyone up for a final end of the year fun challenge?

Find a popular holiday season song in your target language, and post it here.   I was
inspired by this find on youtube:

Le p'tit renne au nez rouge
(The little reindeer with the red nose)

It's the same tune and story as Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and I didn't realize at
first how different the lyrics were!

Une fée qui l´entendit
Pleurer dans le noir
Pour le consoler lui dit :
Viens au paradis ce soir
Comme un ange, nez rouge
Tu conduiras dans le ciel
Avec ton petit nez rouge
Le chariot du Père Noël

A fairy who heard him
Crying in the night
In order to console him said:
Come to paradise tonight
Like an angel, red nose
You will lead across the sky
With your little red nose
The chariot of Père Noël

Trivia: I also stumbled on this list of the eight reindeer:

Seconding that. Would that be Le capitaine oignons savoureux...? (Or some other more grammatically
correct variant?)

Edited to add: loved the Youtube clip. Très touchant.
And also your Christmas song idea. Will see if I have time to find one when I get back from hols before
Christmas.

I like the Christmas song idea. I will look for something this weekend! :D

I third Captain Tasty Onions. I want to be on your team. When you start the thread for the team, post a link here so we know where to sign up. :D
