A chairde,
lo and behold! I finished Colloquial Irish today. I'm not that proud of it, because I haven't really learned much except 326 different ways of saying "I like X" and 243 examples for the use of the present habitual. But hey, finishing a textbook is finishing a textbook, so I will celebrate with a good ol' pint of Guinness this evening. After that, I will continue studying Irish with Mícheál Ó Sidhail's Learning Irish. There's going to be another occasion for celebrating soon, as I'm now working on unit 37 out of 40 in my Scottish Gaelic textbook. You can find more details in my log. I think it right to give this thread a bump considering it is the end of the Gaelic
festival of Samhain, forerunner of Hallowe'en. I've been doing quite a lot with Scottish Gaelic as of late, not working with any courses, just reading and browsing the net. For fellow learners, there are two books that I've recently recieved which I would like to recommend. Both are available at Gaelicbooks.org. The first is 'Fo Sgàil a' Swastika by Donald John MacDonald. This book tells of the authors time spent in the British Army during WW2. The Gaelic is accompanied with an English translation, and a recording of the author himself reading the text. Being a poet, his Gaelic has a beautiful crispness to it, and is a great model for learners. Price: £15.00, worth it for the recordings alone. Secondly, 'Mas Math mo Chuimhne' or 'Reflection of the Gaels', a collection of interviews with various native speakers put together by Clì Gàidhlig. The topics covered include youth, work, traditions, stories, community and change, culture and the language itself. Again, all interviews have an English translation, and the accompanying CD has 24 tracks of audio (not all the interviews). The price:£4.50, not bad! 'Mas Math mo Chuimhne' is probably more suitable for intermediate learners as it exemplifies the everyday spoken language, while 'Fo Sgàil a' Swasktika' is more 'highbrow' in nature. Best bet, buy both! Not to leave the Breton learners out, I came across a site which might interest you, an archive of recordings of native speakers. Short summary of the last months:
I've took the exam from Modern Irish I yesterday (roughly chapters 1-7 from Gaeilge gan Stró vol 1). Anyone who passes the exam may choose to take Modern Irish II. I changed my plans and did not go to Gleann Cholm Cille for the weekend course in late October. Inspired by a thread on the Fluent in 3 months forum, I'm now part of another "challenge", i.e. to read either Harry Potter or The Hobbit in my target language. Since I have An Hobad (I bought it in Ireland), I'll read that one. The project officially started yesterday, but I was busy.
