I've tried to listen to an audiobook as well, Князь Миро Сего (Сегу?), something like that. It's very weird and what is up with Russian audiobooks? Why all the bad bad baaaad acting and different voices and echos?

What is wrong with them? Some of the ones I have are read by a guy (Вячеслав Герасимов) - who tends to be overdramatic - and this can get annoying - but I don't think many audiobooks use different voices or echos. Perhaps you have gotten a recording of a radio play of some sort?

The last one I've been listening to was -luckily- normal, Понеделник начинается в субботу. The sound quality was just a bit odd, but I got used to that. However, the three, four ones I got before that one either had overdramatic readers or loud background music. Or rather, noise. It wasn't really music.

I would suggest to stay away from the recordings of whatever studio that produces the ones with background noise. There are ones that do a professional job.

I think it may be a good idea to remember the readers - and stay away from the ones you hate and look for the ones you like in the future. They should have a name of whoever had read it on the CD. There is this production company that produced a very large number of audiobooks of the Russian and non-Russian classics, and they have at least 5-6 actors that read the books, and of those I only disliked this one guy - the one I mentioned. (Unfortunately, he seems to be their most prolific reader.) But their other readers ranged from ok to pretty good.

Yes, I have read some, but most of them were in a simplified form and it was a long time ago. I plan to read them more thoroughly one day :)

Actually, instead of boring myself to death by repeating the rest of Понеделник... I started a new book! :) Yesterday and today I've read approximately 60 pages of Мастер и Маргарита and listened to the audio book. After four tries I found an audio book without music/echo/actors, but it's abridged nonetheless, so every other page it jumps a couple of paragraphs or a page, and that is a bit annoying, but I'll manage it. What I really like, however, is that I have read all these pages without hardly pausing at all to reread and without using a dictionary (I've only looked up 10 or so words when I have had to read parts "between" the audio, and those words proved useless to know anyway) and I am able to follow the story nonetheless! Of course, I miss loads of words in some places, but it doesn't seem to matter "afterwards". I know what has happened in the book and I understand all the dialogue perfectly. Yay!

One thing that surprised me is that when I have to read to catch up with the audio, I kind of long for the audio again, the book feels more dead when only I read. I actually want the audio, even though it's an old man who breathes funnily and is a bit overly dramatic at times. Odd!

Audio so far: 148 minutes.

Oh, and by the way, I posted a topic asking for tips for Russian literature in the "Specific languages" section, if any Russians reading this didn't notice that one, I'd be very glad if you had a look at it :) The thread is here.

I've read until page 215 (the book starts somewhere around 92 I think), and right now I'm in an "audio gap" where there are 20 pages to read without audio. It's annoying, I'm doing this in order to LISTEN to Russian, but I'm not going to skip all those pages just because the audio does. Oh well. I'm really enjoying the book though, only the magic parts makes it a bit difficult to understand without looking anything up. Usually, you can rely on logic, but here... not all the time ;)
